constant network credential user or password error message

Hi. I have a new dell 8950 desktop and I am having trouble adding it to my home network where the files would be available to my other laptop computer on the network. I have enabled network discovery, enabled file and printer sharing and have attempted to create a new Windows  credential to allow my laptop to use the printer and access files on the 8950. No matter what I do I keep getting a user or password error on the laptop when I click on  the 8950 icon in the file explorer under network on the laptop. My laptop sees the 8950 but I can't get in. Can anyone give me a fix for this?   I wonder if I'm not filling out the fields correctly in the Windows credential. What should I put in Internet or network address, user and password? I put the ip address of the 8950 in the address and created a user and password but the laptop gets the error message when I attempt to use my settings. Is it a credential problem or something else that I am missing?
