If you are inquiring regarding Windows 11 then your system does not show up on this Dell support list. Also your system is almost 11 years old and only Intel 8th Generation CPUs and newer are supported and they were released 3 years ago.

Alienware Desktops with INTEL PTT should work if they are on the WIN10  2004 list AKA

Processor Intel Core X-series  6TH Gen
Chipset   Intel X299 PCH or Newer

  • Alienware Area-51 R4
  • Alienware Area-51 R5
  • Alienware Area-51 R7
  • Alienware Aurora R7
  • Alienware Aurora R8
  • Alienware Aurora R9
  • Alienware Aurora Ryzen Edition R10 (AMD PSP Device)
  • Alienware Aurora R11
  • The AMD Platform Security Processor (PSP), officially known as AMD Secure Technology, is a TPM subsystem incorporatedinto AMD microprocessors

As for XPS its a VERY short list

  • XPS 27 7760
  • XPS 8900
  • XPS 8910

"8th Generation CPUs and newer are supported"

Actually tha's not right,

His 11 year old 1st Gen is definitely not supported.

Systems with at least 4th Gen Haswell and INTEL PTT or Discrete TPM

Intel PTT is basically the firmware alternative to a the hardware based TPM. Intel PTT works on pretty much every processor/chipset since 4th Gen Core (Haswell) processors were introduced and it even supports Bitlocker. This is because Intel PTT supports all Microsoft requirements for firmware Trusted Platform Module (fTPM) 2.0.

will likely work.

Aka they are Secure Boot Windows 8 machines with PTT or TPM.

Basically machines that are on the WIN10  2004 supported List like the Optiplex 3040 are definitely going to work.

* Scroll down and click, "Dell computers tested for update to Windows 10 May 2020 Update (Build 2004)"
* Click your platform
* Search for your specific model in the list

This machine for example IS on the list.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/133210558471

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with two or more cores on a Compatible 64 Bit CPU
Like Pentium G4400 on Optiplex 3040
or system on a chip (SoC). G4400 is 6th gen not 8th gen. Its from 2013.
RAM: 4 gigabytes (GB) or greater.
Storage: 64 GB* or greater available storage is required to install Windows 11.

Additional storage space might be required to download updates and enable specific features.

Graphics card: Compatible with DirectX 12 or later, with a WDDM 2.0 driver.

System firmware: UEFI, Secure Boot capable.

TPM:Trusted Platform Module Hardware(TPM) version 2.0. Or Bios Intel PTT

Display: High definition (720p) display, 9" or greater monitor, 8 bits per color channel.

Internet connection: Internet connectivity is necessary to perform updates, and to download and use some features.

Windows 11 Home edition requires an Internet connection and a Microsoft Account to complete device setup on first use.

The following list of Dell OptiPlex computers that have been tested for update to Windows 10 May 2021 Update. If your computer model is not listed, Dell is not testing the device, and drivers have not been updated for that model.  Win11 should be fine for all of these. However Keep in mind that 9 inch or larger 1280 x 720 monitor aka 720P is also a requirement. The other gotcha is that you will want AT LEAST 8 gigs of ram if all you are using is INTEL Graphics because GPU's are crazy expensive.  The integrated Intel GPU can steal up to 2 gigs of ram which when all you have is 4 makes for a slow as dirt machine.

I have an XPS 8930, but it doesn't qualify according to the M$ app. It came with secure boot off and TPM can't be enabled (it is "blacked" out). I am running Win 10 Home.

I thought encryption was only available with Win 10 Pro? Is that right? Those are the only things flagged. Everything else passes.

@spotteddog  There will be a way to enable TPM and we will have all the information before October when the Windows 11 roll-out starts.

Thank you for the clarification. It is unfortunate that MS is making a lot of older good operating PCs into "boat anchors". I hope they change their minds or have a work around as a lot us are very angry.

Much appreciated for the response.

@Stuarty  I have an XPS 8900 and an XPS 8940.  At present it looks like I'll be able to upgrade one to Windows 11, but not the other.  Support for Windows 10 will continue for at least another 4 years, so this won't be a problem although it would be better if I could upgrade both.  In a 2 or 3 years, I'll build a new computer with DDR5 memory, etc., assuming prices have returned to near MRP, and demote the XPS 8940.
