XPS 8700 known device under processors in Device Manager

Hi everyone,   I have noticed lately with my XPS 8700 desktop.  When I go to Device Manager --> Processors section, I noticed all of the logical processor cores are displaying "Unknown device".   I don't know when this issue happen exactly but only noticed that yesterday.

My XPS 8700 system has BIOS version A14 install (downloaded from the Dell site).  Also,  when I go to the BIOS setting during system reboot (F12),  the processor type is "blank".

Does anyone know how I can get the CPU info back ?   I was searching around Google,  it looks like this issue is related to BIOS update as well as Chipset update.  I updated both from the Dell website for my XPS 8700 system.  No help. Still have the same issue.

It will be greatly appreciated it if you can offer a solution to fix this issue.

Thanks.

My problem has been resolved.  I am now able to see all of the processors ID.

Solution:  Re-install Windows 10 from fresh.

Thanks everyone for providing all the suggestions.

Re: when I go to the BIOS setting during system reboot (F12),  the processor type is "blank".

try clear CMOs.

Clearing CMOS Settings (p.84/86)

1 Remove the computer cover. See "Removing the Computer Cover" on page 15.
2 Locate the CMOS jumper (RTCRST) on the system board. See "System-Board
Components" on page 13.
3 Remove the 2-pin jumper plug from pins 2 and 3 and fix it on pins 1 and 2.
4 Wait for approximately five seconds to clear the CMOS setting.
5 Remove the 2-pin jumper plug from pins 1 and 2 and replace it on pins 2 and 3.

@Kermit4 Perhaps this Intel article and the utility it mentions can help.

Hi Vic384,   I tried the solution you suggested by installing the Intel chipset utility.  I got an error at the end of the install saying platform is not supported.

Hi redxps630,

I tried the solution you suggested.  It is still the same after I rebooted and restarted my computer.  I have a feeling this is something to do with the BIOS (A14).  The processors information for some reason was not able to register in the system.   I also went to the BIOS setup screen during reboot.   The processor information and type are blank.  This leads me to think that the system somehow not able to get the processors information.

Interestingly it posts although it fails to register cpu info.

last resort is to reflash bios of the same version A14, but back up current bios first, use bootable USB key with bios update.exe, and understand there is always risk of bricking motherboard during flash.

For starters, BIOS is opened by pressing F2 at boot, not F12 as was stated.

Reboot and this time tap F12. When that menu opens, look for the option to run Diagnostics and run all of them. Copy error messages if any, and post here.

No error found.  Ran all tests and all pass.

@Kermit4  - Open Device Manager, right-click each of those Unknown devices and uninstall. Then click Action>Scan for hardware changes on the Device Manager toolbar.

What happens now?

@Kermit4 I think the inability of the BIOS and Device Manager to identify the CPU are related. When the BIOS runs, it accesses the CPU ID information in the processor and displays it on the BIOS screen. I assume Device Manager either accesses the CPU ID information in the processor or the information that the BIOS has gathered and stored. Perhaps you can try the Intel Processor Identification Utility to see if it is successful in identifying the CPU.
