XPS 8900, boot failure error 2000-0511

Shut off XPS 8900 one day and the next day, it would not boot up. Opened it up, blew it out, closed it back up and same error.

Error Code: 2000-0511

Fan - The (Motherboard Fan) fan failed to respond correctly.

———-

With the cover off, I can see and hear the MB fan spinning up, then going through several iterations of spinning up and slowing down. Is it working or not? The case fan, though it is supposedly tested during the diagnostic phase, never spins. We took it off and tested using a 12v battery. It works just fine.

BIOS is 2.9.1

One solution was to upgrade the BIOS but I think it’s got the most recent version.

Suggestions? Not a real techie here, so be gentle. Is it time for a new motherboard?

EDITED TO ADD: System logs, BIOS Events shows an alert, rear fan failure. So is my problem the rear fan (which works when connected to a 12v battery) or the Motherboard fan as indicated by the error msg?

No post could be corrupted bios or bad psu.  Cpu usually does not die.

firsr try clear CMOs settings.  Ground your fingers on chassis wall before touching motherboard.

if no change, try use a spare working 24/4 pin psu to test motherboard and rule out bad psu.

 2000-0511 :

Error code indicate CPU Fan . Though Dell computers have been known to have this bugged error messages,  if you are already on latest BIOS. RESET BIOS and release residual power (disconnect everything and hold power button down)

Last option get a new fan, its a simple installation and you can find one in 10$

I did move the pin jumper as suggested, following all protocols. Still getting the same error code. I don’t happen to have a spare PSU, so am not able to test that unfortunately.

FAEB420C-2D59-48A7-9DDF-E60B92F9B5F4.jpegI’ll give this a try and see where we stand. Thank you.

Update: reset the BIOS and released residual power as suggested. Same error code. I guess I’ll bite the bullet and order a new CPU fan. Still hard to understand when that fan works when connected to a 12v battery. Almost like it’s not getting power from the MB.

And maybe I need to clarify which fan we’re talking about. The small box fan attached to the back of the case OR the fan encased between radiator fins that is sitting on top of the Intel chip? I suspect the latter as we did not try to test that fan outside of the case. We can see/hear it spinning up and down during testing. (See uploaded picture)

We seem to have this exact issue with one of the Dells in the office. It's also an XPS 8900, error code 2000-0511, and the issue is with the rear exhaust fan. The fan does not spin up as expected.

I tested the fan in another machine, and it works fine.

On the other side, installing a known good fan in the problem machine did not work.

@SoAZ, did you have any success resolving this issue?
