XPS 8920, fresh install of Windows 10

I have a xps 8920 desktop, which I bought as new at 2017. Recently the desktop did not run smoothly, so I decided to re-install windows 10. I did not make any hardware change since I bought. This desktop has 1TB HDD + 16GB SSD. Here is what I did:

1. Download windows 10 ISO from microsoft on a USB drive.

2. Use the USB drive to boot and install windows 10. Also I formatted the hard drive, so it is totally empty. The recovery partition is also gone.

The first step of installation is successful. I chose the hard drive to install, and it copied all the files. Then it restarted to continue. After restart, there is error which said "the installation could not complete on this computer's hardware". Then it restart again, then it cycles. Then I use "Shift+F10" to enter command line interface and run the command "msoobe". Then it continues with "Just a moment" on the blue background. This "just a moment" hangs on forever and it never complete.

Does anybody have successfully installed fresh copy of windows 10 on xps 8920? Is that possible that some hardware is bad now? My desktop is only three years old, so I guess that the hardware should be ok. Thanks.

Won't install how? Where do you get stuck? Is the system UEFI BIOS Updated?

I tried multiple times with ISO image downloaded from Microsoft and Dell, and the clean install of Windows 10 won't install on the XPS 8920. I bought this machine on Nov 2017. I suspect that pre-installed windows 10 is different from the one I got from Microsoft and Dell. Probably the hardware is only compatible with the pre-installed windows 10? Does anyone know how to contact Dell to get the pre-installed windows 10? Thanks.

@Philip_Yip The BIOS has been updated to the latest version 1.0.23. I tried to have a clean reinstall multiple times, and there are different errors. The first step of installation is successful. I chose the hard drive to install, and it copied all the files. Then it restarted to continue. After restart,  there are the following two errors(sometimes one error happened, and sometimes another error happened).

1. There is error which said "the installation could not complete on this computer's hardware". Then it restart again, then it cycles. Then I use "Shift+F10" to enter command line interface and run the command "msoobe". Then it continues with "Just a moment" on the blue background. This "just a moment" hangs on forever and it never complete.

2. The blue screen said "the computer run into a problem..." and the error code is critical process died. Then it restarted repeatedly.

Thanks.

@tomrick81 -  Reboot and start tapping F12. When that menu opens, look for the option to run diagnostics including RAM and extended HDD tests.

Did you disconnect all external devices, except mouse, monitor and keyboard before booting from the Win 10 USB stick?

@RoHe Yes, I run the diagnostic and did not find any issues. I disconnect all the external devices except mouse, keyboard.

@tomrick81 Have you tried a different USB memory stick? Or have you tried creating the installation media with RUFUS?

@Vic384

I tried creating installation media  with Rufus. I also tried microsoft media download tool. I did not use a different USB stick. If the issue is with USB stick, I guess that it won't let me install at all. But the first step(copying file etc) works fine. The issue happened after restart.

Can you try an earlier build of Windows 10 for example Windows 10 1903 (19H1)? I've put instructions together here for downloading all previously released mainstream builds of Windows 10:

@tomrick81 - The exact same thing was happening to me when I tried to do a clean install of Win 10 v20H2 on an Inspiron laptop that was running Win 10 v1909. It seemed to install and I got as far as making the final settings for PIN etc when it froze. Wouldn't reboot from the internal HDD or even from that v20H2 USB.

Restored my latest image of the HDD with v1909 and it booted right up. PC passed all hardware diagnostics.  I recreated the Win 10 USB (same stick) and it failed again.

Re-imaged back to v1909 again and just did an update to v20H2 using a new download of 20H2 on the same USB, rather than doing a clean install and that worked.

I tried different versions of Windows 10 from Rufus. I also tried to have a new RAM memory, new Disk. But all did not work. After computer restarted, it has the blue screen error "Your computer ran into a problem" with the code CRITIECAL PROCESS DIED. I also reset the CMOS battery.

I tried to install Windows 8.1, and it succeeded. Not sure if the Windows 10 ISO I downloaded is corrupt. But I tried many times.

I used the SD card with the USB card reader to make the bootable installation media. It is bootable, so I think that the reason is not in SD card.

Did you use the bootable SD card to install Win 8.1 when that worked?

Try using using a USB stick in a USB port instead of an SD card for your Win 10 boot media and do it directly on the Microsoft site.

you MUST USE. USB2. SANDISK 32 gig flash drive

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sandisk-cruzer-32gb-usb-2-0-flash-drive-black/9288807.p?skuId=9288807

you SHOULD use the media tool to make the USB DRIVE

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Secure boot should be OFF

SATA OPERATION should be AHCI

F12 boot should choose the sandisk USB that is made as installer.

If thats not working use an oem dvd

https://www.newegg.com/microsoft-windows-10-home-64-bit-installation-recovery-disc-only-no-license-key-included/p/N82E16832350237

F12 boot from it uefi and install windows clean on a blank drive or drive cleaned with diskpart

You can boot from that and use diskpart to CLEAN any storage devices.

@tomrick81

There is no need to buy any disk from Newegg. And you do not need a 32 GB USB. I have used 8 GB and 16 GB sticks. And I may have even used USB 3.0 I cannot tell them apart.

You may have a bad USB stick. Dell has a tool like Rufus to create a Recovery. You can find that Here  You will need your service tag. You can choose either the Support Assist or the Plain Windows 10 Image. The Support Assist OS Recovery only works if you still have the partition.
