XPS 8930, replace front case panel?

Recently I bought a refurb XPS 8930 w/o DVD drive from Dell.

I expected to be able to purchase & install my own DVD drive but discovered that Dell, in their infinite wisdom, did not provide a opening in the front case panel for the installation of such a drive in computers that did not have one factory installed.

I happened to have an external drive that I used for installation of my legacy software & such, but this is a PITA and I want to install an internal drive.

Where can I find a front case panel that has the opening for a DVD/CD/BlueRay drive and how much could I expect to pay for it?

TIA

Maybe ask Dell for a swap of the front case panel?

Someone from Dell will have to answer what the part number is for the panel as well as IF it can be ordered.

The other issue would be part numbers for the 6 pin sata power for the optical drive as well as the Bracket/ CADDY that holds the Optical drive as well as the Faceplate for the Drive.

or buy used one off ebay, most parts for dell are sold there, more than even dell .(as spares, etc)

dell has no parts lists.= (unlike HP)

find the P/n on ebay, that is the best way. unless dell wakes up  one day and offer a silly parts list.

One other thought, is the power cable there for an optical drive?  And is there an open SATA port for it?  Dell tends to customize systems down to only including what is ordered on a particular model.  e.g. power supply may not have an available SATA power connection.  Motherboard may not have the needed SATA port connection, etc.

Maybe best option is to return it (if you have that option) and buy a different one that has what you want or continue to use the external USB connected optical drive.

Welcome to the Dell Community  @Helieum2

Go with a "Chat" if you can't find what you need on-line.

As they use an internal and restricted sales tool to find parts.

Not sure if they will be able to help but its worth a shot???

1) Make sure you have the tray in your chassis that holds the optical drive first.

Upper right of this picture.

There is also a screw on bracket that connects to the back of the drive that locks it into place.  See Speedstep picture above (numbered 1 and 2 on the pic)

2) The red SATA data cable from the pic above is straight on one end to connect to the optical drive and low profile right angle on the other where it can connect to ANY of the 4 SATA ports on the motherboard. They are all 6GB/s ports on the XPS 8930. If it will connect under a longer GPU then it has to be low profile, otherwise it will keep the GPU from fitting  properly into its slot.   Otherwise use any of the ports that are open.

FYI these 18" right angle cables I tried were a little too high at the connector to the motherboard header under my 10.5" MSI Sea Hawk GTX 1080 GPU.  It wouldn't allow the GPU to fit correctly into the slot.  Any SATA power cable with a right angle connector with a metal hold down clip won't fit for sure.  You can take a connector that has a short straight connector and plug it into the SATA motherboard header and bend the cable at a 90 degree angle if necessary.  Simpler to just use the other headers adjacent to the GPU.

3) The part number for an XPS 8930 front bezel with the opening for the optical drive is

RRVY9

This is for the front bezel and does not come with the black tray faceplate (again see Speedstep picture above) for the slim optical drive so make sure you have one on your existing drive.

4)  You will also likely need a mini-SATA power cable for the optical drive to connect to an open SATA power connector off your PSU.  Check the back of your slim optical drive and see if it mini-SATA.  The SATA power connector on the optical drive is flimsy so be careful when installing/uninstalling the power connector.  It has been known to break off.

Keep in mind that slim optical drives are not as robust as the standard half height drives.  If you aren’t using it much and have a DVD drive in a USB 3.0 external drive enclosure consider keeping it and plug it in when you need to.  Now if your existing slim drive is Blu-Ray dual layer then I could see you wanting to use the high end drive.  Otherwise consider living with the external drive and use the $$ towards another upgrade in the machine.

So, just received a brand new XPS and didn't order the optical drive as I had one in my old PC. Came across the same issue. Dell you need to say these things on your website so people paying over $1k know to pay MORE for a CDROM. You tote this as 'expandable' etc, etc. I guess not. I am very annoyed right now.
