XPS 8940, BIOS Recovery Image file, displays unicode?

When trying to download the "BIOS Recovery Image File" for the XPS 8940 the browser displays Unicode characters instead of downloading.

- Go to Dell.com
- Choose Support then "Drivers & Downloads".
- For "Identify your product" type "XPS 8940" then click Search.
- For "Find Specific Drivers" click "Select Drivers".
- For "Critical drivers" expand BIOS(1) and click "Dell XPS 8940 System BIOS".
- In the Version 2.25.0 section click "View Full driver details".
- Scroll down to the "BIOS Recovery Image File" section and click Download.
The browser displays Unicode characters instead of downloading.

@m.j.elder - That has been an issue for a while with .rcv files, and not just for the XPS 8940...

Two work-arounds:

  1. Instead of left-clicking the Download button for the .rcv file, right-click that button and select Save link as... from the menu...
  2. If that doesn't work, download the .exe file for the BIOS you want to recover. Then rename the downloaded file exactly to: BIOS_IMG.rcv - Do not change or add any characters to the .rcv file name, eg, BIOS version number etc.

BTW: why do you need the .rcv file for BIOS 2.25.0?  Did you try to install the .exe file but the update failed? Please provide some info, especially if there's an installation issue with this new update which was released only 2 days ago.

@RoHe - I successfully updated the BIOS using the .exe so I don't need the .rcv as a back up plan.  I'll keep in mind the work-arounds.

Glad you got the BIOS .exe to run.

You only need to use the .rcv file if a BIOS update using the .exe file fails and PC won't boot, or the .exe update causes hardware issues, even though PC still boots.
