XPS 8940, case fan problem
Hi, I've been trying to perform a repair on a fan for an XPS 8940. Upon boot the XPS 8940 goes into pre system boot assessment, tests the fans then errors out with an error code: 2000-0551 Motherboard fan failed to respond correctly.
The CPU fan turns on the second I power on the XPS 8940, but the case fan in the back will not turn on.
I've updated the bios to the most recent version.
Purchased the same model number, a Foxconn PVA080F12H, but the plug appears to have different wiring than the original fan. It still would not turn on.

The fan you purchased has Dell proprietary plug (5 hole) and is not compatible with standard 4 pin fan connector on 8940 motherboard. The pinout of Dell plug and industry standard plug are different and not interchangeable (see pic below, Dell on left, standard on right). Plug the Dell connector in the standard 4 pin header can potentially damage the board fan header or fan.

user reported stock rear case fan in XPS 8940 is Dell P/N D4NJ4-A00. This fan model can also be Foxconn PVA080F12H but uses a standard 4 pin connector. Model

suppose you insert the Dell 5-pin 4-wire plug in standard 4 pin header of 8940 board.
the motherboard expects a 4-pin 4-wire plug following standard pinout.
If you are accidentally lucky, you align the Dell red +12V wire with motherboard pin2 header, which is what motherboard expects. The motherboard expects pin1 to be Gnd, but Dell pin1 is tach (yellow, rpm from fan); and motherboard expects pin3 to be tach, but Dell pin3 is ground. This certainly causes motherboard error.
PS in this lucky accident, the motherboard pin4 (blue) aligns with Dell pin4(blue), which is PWM from motherboard.
