XPS 8940, poor tech support
I have an XPS 8940 one month out of warranty when the front panel USB ports failed. I have been trying for 2 months to get the problem resolved with no help at all from Dell Customer support. I was told by Dell tech support that the failing USB ports are part of the motherboard on my PC. I asked for onsite service (which I would pay for) and was told they do not have a replacement motherboard and didn't know when or if they would receive any! I have been a Dell customer for many years but I will never purchase another Dell product!

If the rear ports still work, a USB hub connected to them is one inexpensive workaround.
You can also find other sources for a replacement board.

@brandyja - Several things to try...
1. Power off, unplug power cord from rear of PC. Disconnect all USB devices (front and rear), except mouse and keyboard which should be connected to rear USB2 ports. Press/hold the power button for ~30 sec. Reconnect power cord to rear of PC and boot up. Test front USB ports when you're back at the desktop.
2. Did you check BIOS seteup to make sure the front USB ports haven't been disabled? Disconnect all USB devices, except mouse and keyboard. Reboot and start tapping F2 to open BIOS setup. Navigate to the System Configuration menu and find the USB settings options.
If front USB ports are disabled, enabled them. If already enabled, disable them. Either way, save the change and exit setup. After PC automatically boots to desktop, test front ports if you enabled them in setup.
If you disabled them in setup, reboot again, go into BIOS setup and enable those ports again, save the change and exit. When you're back at desktop plug a UBS device into a front port and test again.
3. If that doesn't help, you might try resetting BIOS:
4. If they're still not working, you could try a variation on what @ejn63 suggested. Connect a USB3 hub with its own external power adapter to a front USB port. Plug the hub's adapter into a wall outlet and connect USB devices to the powered hub and test...
