XPS 8940, PSU upgrade to 850W that fits inside the case

8940 stock psu is a modified TFX with dimensions 85x65x225 mm.  (standard TFX is

D500E005P H500EPM-00 0Y7R0X 8.5*6.5*22.5cm https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Dell-500W-Power-Supply-D500E005P-H500EPM-00-0Y7R0X-8-5-6-5-22-5cm-/392901055982

looking at 8940 case, it is not mandatory that psu upgrade has to be TFX in order to fit inside the case. when looking at stock psu, the narrowest dimension of 65 mm wide is the actual physical restriction due to motherboard in proximity, but there is no restriction of a psu to be 85 mm high. In fact it can be quite a bit taller than 85 mm (up to the width of case,169 mm). There is no other component in the case restricting this dimension.

In comes 850 W SFX psu by cooler master, V850 SFX Gold. DIMENSIONS (L X W X H)100 x 125 x 63.5 mm
not only is its width of 63.5 mm comfortably compatible with 8940 case (< 65 mm), its other two dimensions can fit inside the case with ease.

now user may not be able to screw mount this psu in 8940 case, but looks like it can fit.

Six pin is not the only issue.  There are 2 other 4 pin cables.  G5 /8940/7080 is different from the others.

So this is NOT a solution for the above listed models.

CPU connectors are not GPU connectors.

Number of pins is not an indicator of it working.

People need to stop extrapolating working without having done it.  Otherwise you will force a connector in the wrong place and DESTROY everything including cpu and ram and hard drives etc. You have been warned.

@DELL-Chris M  would have more information.

Comeap says their adapter DOES NOT WORK on G5/8940/7080.

You try and fry your system its on you.

the xps 8940 and the dell g5 5000 series and 5090 series all have the same proprietary motherboards. same 6 pin and 2 4 pins.

the coolermaster 850 sfx has the 2 4pin cpu connections and all the rest. its just finding the proper working 24pin to 6 pin adapter to power the board. everything else will work fine, just that proper missing peice.

i dont get why. serch up the motherboard servic manual for both models and there identicle in everyway except the g5 has the led daughter board.

Plus, @Onefunkydude literally just proved on page 3 of this thread that it IS possible to use an SFX PSU with the Comeap adapter on an XPS/G5 No fried system, as far as I could tell from his post.

750w cooler master ppwerr supply that he used has the 2 x 4 Pins for the cpu. The only cord u need to buy is the 24 pin to 6 pin that's it that's all h

Because it is an underpowered brick with only a 500w psu. Shame on Dell for putting such a shamfully wimpy psu in this pc.

Honestly, the PSU is the one decent part in this machine. I have a 500W too and it's perfectly capable of running my i9-10900 and RTX3070. I've never encountered a real-life situation where I was able to overwhelm the PSU, not even in the most demanding games. If I ran a synthetic benchmark that boosted both GPU and CPU to their max at the same time, then maybe, but in real-life games use less than half the CPU cores, so it never draws more than 70-80W, and the RTX3070 draws about 200-215W, so there's plenty of room.

I have a Dell 8940, which came with with an Intel i5-11400 CPU, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER 6GB GDDR6 GPU, and a Dell 360W Power Supply.

I'm in process of upgrading to an NVidia RTX 2060 GPU, to support an Oculus Quest 2 VR headset with an Oculus link cable to the PC. I've actually gotten it to work with the existing 360W GPU, by using a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter to the RTX 2060. I haven't stressed things so far, and I'm not a gamer or bitcoin miner, but I do want to use all the RTX 2060 features like ray tracing, for example, and video playback, of course. But it worries me that the original GTX 1660 SUPER has a 125W max power draw and the RTX has a max 160W power draw, and I'd like to upgrade to a compatible 500W or better PSU .... I don't want to fry any expensive parts.

I cannot find a *new* Dell or compatible third party 500W exact replacement for my 360 watt unit on the net, and I've not had good luck in the past with used PSUs. From reading this thread I see there are available aftermaket high wattage ATX (and maybe TFX?) PSU's that would fit inside the case, but apparently I'd need to use a compatible 24-pin to 6-pin motherboard connector (which may or may not exist), the 6-pin to 8-pin PCIe adapter, the 4-pin aux CPU connector, and to be able to plug in through the existing psu opening, and not have the PSU fan blocked by the case.

I'm reading on this thread that there are aftermarket PSU's that fit in the case, but has anyone actually gotten a new Dell/Compatible or aftermarket PSU to work in view of the issues above, and if so can you tell me the the part numbers/vendors you used, and case mods if necessary.

Thanks

That is false.  There are ZERO vendors for 24 to six pin and dual 4 pin G5 / 8940 / Optiplex 7090 power supplies.

@DELL-Chris M  can provide part numbers for the 300W, 500W power supplies for these models which ARE NOT compatible with Optiplex 3040 3050 3060 3070 7040 7050 7060 7070

I want to circle back around to this topic for a moment.  If I swap out the PSU for the 700w Silverstone unit, AND swap out the motherboard to a non dell unit, will the plugs etc for the case work with a new non dell motherboard?  This could be an option for me to move to 13th gen intel chip/ARC graphics for video editing (hyperencode is great).  I can use my ram, ssds etc in my system currently.
