XPS 8950, 2nd HDD noisy

Just purchased an XPS 8950 to replace my XPS 8900.

I installed a 3.5" 14TB HDD which I had in my XPS 8900.

Strangely, it is making quite loud noises when reading/writing most of the time. HDD is less than a year old. I did not have any noise issues with it on my XPS 8900.

I have done defrag also. HDD tests all passed. Is it because the position of the HDD sits?

When I put my hand over on top of the machine (with slight pressure) where the HDD sits the noise becomes less noisy. Which is fine by me, but I can't keep doing that all the time.

This is a weird one. Anyone shed a light in what could be the best action to take?

Thanks

Is it the HDD itself or is the HDD just causing something else to slightly rattle? I would check all the mounting hardware, including the hardware for the cage. If all the hardware is tight, sometimes a few, small well placed pieces of folded paper can be used to stop rattles.

A few sheets of paper in the right place will do the trick.

curious if the noise has something to do with the orientation of hdd, assuming 8900 and 8950 tower are both upright.  hdd in 8900 is fastened with screws to its bottom and oriented vertically. hdd in 8950 is held by blue caddy which slides in hdd bay in horizontal orientation.

it is possible that the spinning device in hdd makes more noise when in one orientation than turned 90 degree.  use a different test hdd to check the 8950 hdd bay to see if noise is reproducible, and try the other 3.5 hdd bay if possible.  the rattling noise could be due to the bay not fastened tight enough to the case. just a guess.

hi, I have tried all the stuff that you mentioned. Still making noise. When I put the HDD back into my 8900 its not very noisy. So this is baffling!!

If the hdd causes noise in both horizontal and vertical orientation in 8950, then the blue caddy is somehow loose in the hdd bays (both top left and top right) or both bays are not securely fastened to chassis.  by doing all tests you implied another 3.5 hdd causes same noise.  then you can try open side panel and press the hdd bay with your hands while pc is running to see if the bay is a bit loose cause rattling. If the bay is loose, pressing on it hard may reduce the noise.  afa we know the bay is secured with screws and can slide to middle of case after screw is removed.  Solved: XPS 8950 Left HDD Bay removal - Dell Community
