XPS 8950, upgrade to GTX 4090?
I am trying to find out if anyone has tried to upgrade the XPS 8950 with a GTX 4090 video card? I upgraded to a 1000w PSU and thought about upgrading the card at the same time, but I was not sure if it would fit in the case properly. The area between the PSU and video card connection does not seem to be like much. Any help would be appreciated, as I didn't realize how limited the space was were the video card goes.

Depends on the card. Some of the 3rd party cards can get kinda big. If we look at the FE 4090 its actually a tad bit shorter than the 3090, 304 x 137 x 61mm of the 4090 compared to 313 x 138 x 61mm of the 3090. Here is my 8950 with a 3090, for reference. So long as you dont go over that 11.5in, maybe even 12in mark, it should fit. If its longer, you might need to modify the fan shroud and or bracket, if you still want to use it. I think that bracket really isnt needed if you use the support stand underneath the card, if your xps came with one. If not, maybe pick one up from Dell cause its a great little support for large cards.

@CSPRO Are you referring to the Founders Edition when you say FE?
@ProfessorW00d I tried using google and some other search engines to see if someone has tried it but I could not find anything. It was actually surprising since I thought this system was a bit popular with all the general reviews for it.
Oh, and for some reason I can't see the pictures that were posted. Not sure if it's a setting. or something else.

I'm pretty sure I have seen it done here, but I can't locate a thread at the moment. As I recall, both the fan shroud and PSU shroud come out for clearance. I think the problem is under power . . . even for the 1000 watt PSU, due to the 12 volt 3-rail design. The 1350 watt PSU delivers sufficient wattage to an RTX 4090.

Yes, FE Founders Edition.
I grabbed some quick specs from here, https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/ you could use it to also compare card dimensions easily.
Not sure on the photos. I can see photos others post so im not sure why you couldnt see mine. Maybe it is a setting. They are just photos of my 8950 with 3090 and a measuring tape to compare dimensions in regards to the PSU-GPU dimensions and the GPU-Fan dimension.

OK, it was in the Alienware forum for an Aurora R13 upgrade to RTX 4090 These are essentially the same metal chassis insides as the XPS series, but the outside plastic shrouding is different. Also . . . same Dell proprietary PSU's.

It is funny how the outside is the only thing that looks so different. Thanks for all the references.

The pictures started showing and the height looks like it might barely fit. This is assuming I am looking at everything right. I got 11.97 x 4.84 x 2.38 inches for the 4090 FE from the Amazon listing page.

According to nVidia the dimensions are 304mm x 137mm x 61mm . . . which translates to 11.97" x 5.39" x 2.40"

It depends on the edition you buy from what I have gathered, since I am getting different listed dimension. The VIPERA NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 FE has 11.97 x 4.84 x 2.38 inches for example.

Not sure what "VIPERA" is supposed to mean. There is only one nVidia RTX 4090 Founders Edition. You are sourcing information from some clueless clown scalping on Amazon. Get your information from the manufacturer nVidia under the "Specs" section.

I wasn't even taking into consideration that anything in the listings might be misleading. That is why I came here and figured I would ask around and see what information I can gather before making a costly decision. You think they will ever decrease the size of the card in future versions? I really regret not checking the amount of space this system had for upgrades before buying it... I did not realize video cards could get so massive.

Again, I think the RTX 4090 Founders Edition will fit in your XPS 8950 if you remove the PSU shroud and the front fan bracket. This is based on the measurements photos up thread . . . not that I have actually done the mod. If you are going to get an RTX 4090 FE, try not to buy from scalpers at Amazon or eBay. Look to nVidia or Best Buy or other sellers that retail at the suggested $1,600.

@Simple-Redaction - The RTX 4090 GPU is 3 slots wide. Will that fit in your PC without interfering with the adjacent PCI-e slots and/or with other components on the motherboard?
Assuming you find a card that physically fits in your PC (and your PSU is adequate), don't forget to open BIOS setup and disable Secure Boot before installing the new card. Otherwise, the PC may not boot with a "retail" GPU installed.
