Battery light flashes orange and laptop doesn’t turn on without charger

  • I am using xps 15 9550, which is 5 years old. All of a sudden I have noticed the battery light indicator is flashing orange light while the laptop was charging. When I unplug the charger my laptop won’t turn on. With charger it turns on but orange light is continuously flashing. I can see that charging level was increased though.

how do I fix this? Please advise

Temporary fix/Workaround: Hard Reset

  1. Turn off the laptop.

  2. Disconnect  the AC adapter and remove the battery or simply remove the base cover and disconnect the battery cable.

  3. Disconnect all devices such as USB drives, printers, webcams, and media cards (SD/xD).

  4. Press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 seconds to drain the residual power.

  5. Connect the AC adapter and battery.

  6. Turn on the computer.

Blinking amber or orange light usually means battery is failing or failed and needs replacement.

To be sure here, run Dell Diagnostic tool on the computer to check battery health. You could do this by expanding Check Battery Health Status In Diagnostic in link below and then follow steps.

I am assuming the battery in this five year computer has never been replace with a new Dell battery....

Thank you for your suggestions, I have run the diagnostic tool and found the error code 0132. Which means I may have to reseat the battery or replace it ? my system shows windows is updated, so I am assuming there is no need to update BIOS ?

I haven’t replaced original battery in the last 5 years.

Can I run the laptop with Charger for shorter duration till I fix the battery issues?

Yes, indeed you need a new Dell battery. A battery lasting for five years in a dell computer is a very long time now days. I would suggest checking Dell com or Parts People for a new dell battery. Parts People usually cover their batteries with a one year warranty.

Also check out battery removal in link below:

Please, keep in mind, Dell  XPS 9550 support 3-cell (56 WHr) and 6-cell (84 WHr)

Lastly, yes you can run computer on AC adapter power till a new Dell battery is replace.

Thanks for the quick feedback and good luck with your search for a new battery.
