Dell Dock WD15 firmware update fails

When I try to update my Dell Dock WD15 firmware from my XPS 15 (using DellDockingStationFwUp_1.0.9_WD15_20210716.exe), the update tool is able to update the following components:

  • MST1
  • Dell WD15 TI Port Controller 1
  • Dell WD15 Dock EC

However, it fails to update the following component:

  • Non-TBT Cable

The tool says that the current "Non-TBT Cable" version is 00.02.84 and the new version is 00.03.12.

When the system restarts and the update begins, I get the following error message: "Extended EC update failed."

It is not able to upgrade "Non-TBT Cable" from version 00.02.84 to 00.03.12.

Please help

Hi, I'm trying to update two of my WD15 dock and I have a similar problem, do not succeed to update.

I'm using two differen laptop, i.e. Latitude 5320 and Latitude 5330, both with the last BIOS, and in both case, by using the file "DellDockingStationFwUp_1.0.9_WD15_20210716.exe" I start with this initial status

and here I note the first strange thing: the current versione of the "MST1"" is a very strange "0.0.0f6" against a current version of "3.12.002".

This MST1 (MultiStreamTransport hub1) should be the only component to be updated but when I hit Update, the process stops after the first phase with the following error

i.e. MST1 firmware Update failed.

How to solve? is it normal to have this current version of that MST1 components?

Thanks and Regards to everybody

In my case, it is "Non-TBT Cable" which cannot be updated. It is quite ridiculous that a Dell program on a Dell PC (XPS 15 9550) cannot update a Dell dock.

Ok, I update myself for future help!

On another forum thread I found this information:

The WD15 is an older model dock (2015) and there have been several firmware updates.
The firmware update will not run on an xx20 or xx30 series Latitude. You will need to run the firmware with the old computer.
Connected with my new laptop, it shows an older version for MST1 (0.0.0f6), but I get a Firmware update failed.
I connected my old laptop and it showed everything already up to date for firmware. (latest MST1 - 3.12.002).

Hi Manuel, yes I agree that the sw to update should be more stable and working from any Dell laptop.
In another thread I read a suggestion to try to update with the WD15 connected but with all connections/cables unplugged. I will try later tomorrow.

no luck, even with all cables unplugged but still using a latitude 5430. I hope to try with a latitude 5300.

I had already tried it, same problem (with "Non-TBT Cable"). The nice thing is that the XPS 15 9550 (with which I am trying to upgrade the dock) and the WD15 dock were released together.

Which OS are you using/installed? Win10 or Win11?

Hi all, I tried with a Dell 5440 and it was failed but when I tried with a 3400 it was ok. I have Win 11 on both.

@delvo_69 Just FYI... I receive the exact same error message as you do (attached). I'm trying to update the firmware on my Dell dock (WD15). I run the "Dell Firmware Update Utility | Dock" on my Windows 11 Inspiron 16 7640 2-in-1 laptop. The app lists 4 'Payloads' that need updating. Shortly after I click the 'Update' button, however, the Dell app issues the following message in red: "Error: Firmware update failed". There is a red 'X' beside the payload named 'MST1'. However, the app does not explain why it failed or what I should do to make it succeed.
