Have a dell l502x is there any way to check the cimos battery without removeing it

If the system is booting with a clock not set error when it's left unplugged, and particularly if the main battery no longer holds a charge it's likely in need of replacement. That said, if it's original to the system and therefore well over a decade old, replacing it would be a good idea.
