Given that Dell has no Ubuntu support for the XPS (officially anyway), the Precision Mobile Workstation 5000 or 7000 series would be a better starting point.
This is particularly true if the system is mission-critical, as Pro Gold support is available for the XPS, and the level of support you will get is well above anything in the consumer-grade system (XPS, Inspiron) world.
