Laptop not charging after using wrong charger

Hi there,

We have two laptops, a Dell XPS 13 and a HP probook. Last weeks I was running low on battery and had to charge before the Dell shuts off. Couldn't find the Dell charger but the HP charger seemed to fit. However, the HP was a 65w 19.5v instead of the Dell 45w 19.5V. Later I restarted without changing the charger and while booting I got a message about some different charger input. That message had three options to chose from (I don´t recall the exact content unfortunately). Now I found the Dell charger but it won´t charge the laptop anymore. Internet says, that higher watt shouldn't hurt the laptop. Is it possible that I changed something in the Bios or alike so that the XPS doesn't accept the original charger anymore?

Thanks a lot for any help!

First thing to try is a new, OEM Dell AC adapter.  If the battery is original to this system, which is about 6 years old, it's likely at the end of its life and needs replacement.

Welcome to the Dell Community  @sfalke

To better assist you, the members and I would need the exact model number of your laptop/desktop???

  1. Go into your BIOS.

Power-on the system and start tapping the F2 key to enter System Setup.

  1. In Windows:

Hold down the” Windows “key and tap the “R “key.

Then type msinfo32 and hit enter.

Best regards,

Edit:

1. I´m able to start the laptop with the HP charger, but not with the Dell charger

2.

3. I could recreate the battery massage when booting: "Allert. The AC power adpater wattage and type canno be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available. To coninue press F1, to change setup options press F2, to run onboard diagnostic press F5

4. If I run onboard diagnostic, I get the info that battery is reaching the end of its usuable life. This is odd because I did not have any battery performance issues before

Hi and thanks for the quick reply. I can access Bios but nothing happens if I press windows key + R. I was able to extract the service tag (See edit) from Bios, hope that might help.

Wow...I feel really dumb. Just bought a new adapter and it works. Not sure how this charger switching should have destroyed my OEM one or if it is just a very unlikely coincidence. Thanks for pointing me towards that somewhat obvious fix. Much appreciated.
