The app needs to be logged into the email linked to your Dell account.
For me, my subscription was not linked to my Dell account email at first. I went to the McAfee support chat, and with the order number the customer service person was able to link the subscription to my email and I was able to activate the subscription.
(FYI the customer service person at first said I needed to activate through my bitlocker account ... a bit odd as a) I am not aware I have a separate bitlocker account and b) with other McAfee subscriptions I have never used bitlocker ...)
