My external headset microphone isn't working

External microphone input isn't working at all on my XPS 15 9570. I am using the HyperX cloud headset with an adaptor for a single input.

I have previously struggled to get the headphones of the headset working and it often fails to detect being plugged in if I have realtek and maxxwaves audio enabled on startup. I have reinstalled realtek drivers multiple times.

After finally having the pop-up appear for me to be able to select headset, my mic fails to work. It doesn't show up under recording devices(and now neither does my headset show under playback devices when it previously did). Whilst I still had the pop-up available to me I also tried mic input only and that also failed to work.
