Replace CPU Fan?
HI --
Is it possible to purchase a replacement CPU fan for my XPS laptop? Recently the laptop fan has been running quite a bit and the computer has frozen a few times in the last day or two. I noticed the laptop is very hot and so I'm thinking the CPU fan is dying and not able to keep the CPU cool, hence my machine freezes.
I'm hoping this is an option as opposed to needing to buy a new laptop.
Thanks
Rich

Yes, you can buy a replacement fan. What model, how old is the laptop?
It's possible that the fan is spinning fine, but that there is a layer of dust on the fan blades or inside the radiator fins. I recently disassembled the fan in my old XPS and removed a fair bit of dust and fluff.
It's also possible that the thermal compound has dried out somewhat, so is no longer effectively transferring heat from CPU and GPU to the heatsink. If so, you can clean off the old compound and apply fresh.
