Shutdown vs. Sleep
Every night, I like to either shutdown, or put my computer to sleep, as I feel it's not best to leave it running all night if it's not being used. Is shutdown or sleep better for it, during these times? If so, which one, and why?

There's a third option--hibernation which turns the computer off but keeps the active windows in memory. Hibernation requires a brief press of the power button to wake it and it looks like it is rebooting but all windows with reappear. That is best for daytime when you will be away for a few hours. Shutdown at night is the safest option. See-

Sorry, I should have specified that I am running Linux. Does this still apply?
