SSD Onboard?

Hi, I am looking to buy a new laptop (XPS) and looking at specs on dell.com.

I have a question about SSD. Some models are listed as having:

1. "512GB PCIe NVMe x4 Solid State Drive Onboard"

and some as having:

2. "512 GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid-State Drive".

I think I understand 2. It is standard drive in M2 slot. But what does "onboard" in 1. mean? Soldered on?

Thank you for any hints.

It will depend on the system model you're considering.  As far as I've seen, there is just one Dell XPS model with a soldered-on SSD - the 7390 2-in-1.  On these, the SSD and memory (along with the CPU) are all soldered onto the mainboard and not upgradeable.

The other XPS 13 model (9380, non- 2 in 1) has a separate NVMe drive that's replaceable.  So do the 15" models (again, for now;  it wouldn't be a surprise for anyone reading this in a year or more to find that it's spread to other models).

Thank you ejn63.

It woudlbe nice if Dell commented as well and we would not need to guess what we are buying.

BTW, it would also help if model numbers were clearly indicated on dell.com product pages. The only way I can tell which one i'm looking at is to look at URL, and assume that some numbers there indicate model number.

1. I just check that exact model's PDF Service Manual.

BTW ... My (circa 2014) Lenovo X1-Carbon (Gen-2) has both the Intel-processor and ram soldered in. Basically, it is built like a smart-phone inside to keep it thin.

2. Agreed

hello.

I have an xps 13 9343 (2015 model with touchscreen)

1. my original 256 gb hdd (7k4MH) has failed in 2018. nothing could be recovered - i have read that some spontaneous failure in some bits caused it (some say that a BIOS update could have prevented that)

i changed my HDD with 512 GB ( M2 form factor with a SATA intervace). no not mistake with the M2  form Factor with NVMe interface

2 regarding your earlyer post - Replacement battery type JD25G or 90V7W - I did it on my own expence

I replaced the old 52 Wh with the newer 56Wh - both from Dell - it works (i am currently on my 2nd charge)

I have read that the 90V7W only works with the 2015 or later models (not for the 2013 ones)

I wish you all the luck

P.S. I made the account just to reply to your questions because i encountered the same problems

Feel free to ask any more Q
