Studio XPS 1340 compatible RAM

I thought I'd post what I've learned about compatible RAM for the DELL Studio XPS 1340. I know this model is relatively old but I love my XPS especially with it's new 500GB Samsung SSD HDD, and it meets all my current needs.

Wanting to upgrade from 4 + 2GB 1.5V RAM I purchased one stick of 8GB DDR3L dual voltage Crucial RAM. Laptop would not load Windows 7 64 bit. After reading more online I learned that 4GB is the maximum per slot (8GB total) so I exchanged the 8GB for 2 x 4GB Crucial DDR3L dual voltage RAM, as DDR3L is supposed to be backwards compatible with 1.5V so should be fine.

Again, laptop would not load Windows. I unplugged the CMOS battery to reset  the BIOS but this didn't help. I did some further reading and found an eBay ad which said that older DELL machines don't work with dual voltage RAM, and somewhere else that some machines will only work with high density or low density RAM. So back to the (hopefully) understanding retailer to swap for a pack of 2 x sticks of Corsair CMSA8GX3M2A1066C7 4GB DDR3 1066MHz PC3-8500 SODIMM Apple MAC Memory DUAL CHANNEL low density RAM. This time Windows loaded up just fine.

Here's a link to an article about high vs low density RAM:

and a pic of my new Corsair RAM:

Thanks. I'm considering upgrading mine, and this is exactly the information I need.
