XPS 13 9310, charge light blinks

I have bios settings to charge the battery when below 50% and stop at 90%. When my XPS 13 9310 Developer Edition is between those values and not charging, the charging light on the front edge of the laptop will blink. Every few minutes it will come on for a few seconds. It's annoying.

Update=

Complaint = XPS 13 9310 users may see the charge LED blinking when the computer is under a heavy load.

Discussion = The XPS 13 9310 supports hybrid power which enables the Laptop to function optimally during instances of heavy loading. It does so by coordinating the power input from BOTH the AC adapter and the battery at the same time CAUSING the charge LED to blink. This is by design on Dell hybrid power systems.

It is none of those things. There appears to be a bios issue. Dell is on it.

1. Check the power cord connector. During the charging process of the laptop, it is easy to cause the power indicator to flash continuously due to improper connection of the charging power supply and poor contact. You can reconfirm whether the power cable is connected correctly.
2. Shut down and restart. Sometimes the indicator light will flicker due to the operation of the computer hardware. You can try to shut down and restart. If it is running, some of the above problems should be resolved.
3. When the battery is out, if the computer is not charged with the charger, some computers will flash the power indicator when the battery is low, which means that the battery is out. Just connect the charger to the computer and the problem will be solved.
4. Battery problem. When charging, unplug the computer battery. If the indicator light flashes and the situation improves, it means that the problem is probably caused by the battery, such as battery aging.
5. Accidents. Sometimes this happens suddenly. If you encounter this problem by accident, it hasn't happened again since then, it may just happen accidentally in the computer.
6. Repair. If none of the above methods solve the problem, or if such problems still occur frequently, then it is recommended to take the laptop to a special computer repair shop for repair, and the problem can be solved quickly.

No, things are not fine. Nothing I have said or done should give you the impression that anything is fine. It is a bit worrying to me that you would even ask that.

  • The light continues to blink
  • I continue to be concerned that the system is constantly charging the battery for just a second or two at a time, which may be shortening the life of the battery
  • I continue to wait for a promised response from Dell telling me that they have found the issue and it will be fixed in the net bios update, or that they have at least reproduced the problem.

So, do I need assistance? Yes, I need exactly the same assistance that I needed when I first came here because, so far, Dell has done nothing.

There is nothing you can do. This will occur even if you are just clicking around the bios setup screens. So, it has nothing to do with the OS. It is entirely a hardware/firmware issue that only Dell can address.

Hello,

I also have this exactly same annoying issue

I really hope a fix will be found soon.

Thanks a lot for any advice.

Could Dell please confirm that this is a known issue and a coming firmware update should fix it?

I would also like to know if the battery can be damaged with this power management behaviour.

Thanks.

Hello Earl Magnus,

I spent a lot of time yesterday to investigate on this issue and found very interesting threads :

-XPS 13: Display issue affecting 7390, 9300 and 9310 models : Dell (reddit.com)

-Re: XPS 13 9310 Display brightness flicker when under single core CPU load and on charger - Dell Community

Battery charging issue (light indicator switching ON/OFF intermittently) and screen flickering seem to have the same cause.

Have you tried to disable "turbo boost" in BIOS settings? This is the suggested workaround (no more blinking light nor flicker), and it works on my unit. I let you read the thread for the downside effect.

I really hope Dell will provide a correction soon.

I totally agree with you Earl! It is just a workaround and I'm also expecting for a fix without loosing "Turbo boost feature".

Thanks for that.

Turbo boost is an advertised feature of the machine and is enabled by default. If, in fact, it is malfunctioning, I will expect repair or replacement.
