XPS 15-7590, freezes randomly occasionally

Hi,

I have experienced some random freezing issues on my brand new Dell XPS 15 7590 (FHD version i7 9750H 16GB ram GTX 1650 and 500GB SSD).

It mostly happens when browsing (Chrome and Firefox), but occasionally when I'm using Java based applications such as the Mathematical tool Maple. I do usually have a browser open in the background so I can't be sure. Also, rarely when using Windows File Explorer with no browsers in the background.

When my screen freezes, I can still give commands to the computer: If I press ALT-CTRL-DEL it will finish that command straight away after the freeze. If I type stuff, the typed stuff will be quickly written when the freeze is passed. Note, that the freeze can be lasting for anything between 5 to 30 seconds.

I have updated all my Drivers and I have run Dell Support Assist. I have also manually updated to the latest Intel display driver and updated my Graphics card with Nvidia Experience. In addition, I have run Dell Update, so I have the latest BIOS. I have also removed all Killer drivers and installed the bare Intel WiFi card driver. All in an attempt to solve my freezing issues but it haven't solved it unfortunately.

I like my XPS laptop and would be happy to know if anyone has found a solution to this problem.

Thanks!

Best,

David

I tried disabling SupportAssist's ability to run in the background. I'll see if that fixes it for me.

I have this issue too. I have had my 7590 for just one week today and it did this since day one.

On day one, I installed all the latest updates, as is best practice.

If there isn't a fix for this by 27th May I think Dell should take the machine back as next Friday is the end of the 14 day distance selling rule.

This issue isn't acceptable on a new machine. There is no excuse and it shouldn't be a customer's problem.

How many devices does this happen on. Isi t all of them and is it a new issue?

I've fixed it! I tried a bunch of stuff and had no luck. First, the "answer" on this thread. Then, I downloaded this driver, as directed by support: https://dell.to/2TsWql2. This helped but still didn't fix it all. Doing some more searching on the internet, I saw some people recommending uninstalling Dell software. I uninstalled everything but SupportAssist and Power Manager and still had the problem. I called support and was frustrated that they didn't seem to acknowledge that this was a problem many people had. All they did was check simple hardware things and suggested calling (paid!) software support. I looked at the Task Manager to see what was causing the CPU spikes during the freezes, and explore.exe kept popping up as the top culprit. I looked online and found a possible explanation: the slideshow desktop background change. Sure enough, I was getting these seconds-long freezes every minute, exactly when the desktop was changing. I set the interval to 6 hours instead of 1 minute, and sure enough, I don't get the freezes anymore (at least not every minute!). I'm glad the fix was so simple, but frustrated at Dell's customer service. Who would have thought that one of the most powerful laptops you can buy would be brought to a stall by changing the desktop background?

Try removing SupportAssist (and see my post for the list of other Dell utility I removed to get rid of the freezes).

I have a Dell 7590 i9 1TB 32G that does the freezing thing out of the box. I have only installed Office 365 Business and performed all updates. The freezing is driving me crazy, especially since I paid top dollar for this beast. I found a thread that said the graphics card may need to be updated manually so I went to the Device list and told the NVIDIA display driver to update today. The previous version was from December 2019. The computer searched and found a newer driver from March 2020. Will report back if the freezing improves. Come on Dell!!!

I was having this problem for a year or so and it was so bad I wanted to throw it out the window.  The solution was posted by a Dell-Cares moderator and is in the second solution on page 1 of this thread. The only problem was that I had reformatted the computer with a vanilla version of Windows 10 from the Microsoft site and I didn't have the Intel Power management application so I glossed over it as a potential fix. I downloaded the utility and made the following changes and my beautiful Dell xps 7590 is in beast mode!! No more problems.

In the Intel power management application:

1. click System

2. Click the power tab

Under on battery, turn off Panel self refresh

Under plugged in, turn off Panel self refresh

Random freezes or stuttering problem solved.

(I also turned off all settings under the power tab because they all limit the computer but save battery.)

Hope this helps anyone out there.

Edit: Restart the computer after making the changes

How do I remove the update utility? Sorry if that's a dumb question. Please help!

I also had this issue. After removing all dell programs the stutters/freezes have stopped. I wish I could have narrowed it down to the exact program causing issue, but there were too many to do that effectively. Come on Dell!

My screen was frozen just now.  I had already killed Panel Self Refresh.

Just playing around and flipping switches I turned off Display Power Savings (An Intel power saving feature to enhance image viewability in battery mode) and the screen unfroze.  No restart needed.

Odd since I'm plugged in through my Dell dock and certainly not on battery, but it worked for now.

My Dell XPS 15 7590 also has the intermittent touchpad freezing problem (about once every 2-3 days -very annoying).  To fix it, I was doing a full restart w/ (ctrl+alt+del), but found doing a  (ctrl+alt+del) and tabbing to 'sign out' would fix the problem (until it happens again).  I do not have a permanent solution however.
