XPS 15 7590 GPU Disappeared

I believe a recent bios or other update has caused my GPU to entirely disappear. I initially found the GPU non-operative when attempting to play a game, when it defaulted to the Intel GPU. At this point, the GPU was only available in hidden devices. I then followed the instructions detailed by dell support in this reddit post, which caused my GPU to entirely disappear. Following this, I have tried the following steps:

  • Every possible software/firmware/bios update
  • Various NVidia drivers, none of which can install without the gpu detected
  • Checks in the BIOS for hardware detected, of which there is none of the GPU kind.
  • clean windows installs
  • DDU wiping of everything

In addition, the warranty expired not particularly long ago, which is massively inconvenient. Frankly there hasn't been a period with the laptop where i haven't had some issue, ranging from mildly inconvenient to crippling. Massively unimpressed.

Hold CTRL and F8 during startup -- boot menu should appear.  Boot in safe mode and look in the device manager under display adapters.  Do both adapters (intel and nVidia) show?

No, only the intel gpu appears, including with hidden devices visible

If you don't see both GPUs in safe mode, you have a hardware problem -- the GPU has failed.

Unfortunately if the warranty has expired, you're about to find out why any new system should be purchased with a 3- or 4-year warranty.  The boards are not inexpensive to replace.

That's outrageous. How can a company get away with selling an £1800 laptop that breaks after less than 2 years? Are there any approaches I can take to get this replaced, without spending a further £700? Are there any legal protections against this (uk)?

The best protection is a 3 year minimum warranty at purchase;  you had that option and it's relatively inexpensive when purchased with a new system.  The fact is that most new systems integrate enormous functionality onto a single system board, which represents the major portion of the cost of a system if something -- even a small component  -- fails.

I have the same issue. It's not hardware, it's low level software driver conflict issues.
On fresh windows install it auto installs the intel UHD onboard GPU drivers first then it goes and downloads the Nvidia GPU drivers. It auto installs 4 Nvidia drivers, GPU... Sound... USBC or whatever etc. Upone checking device manager you can see Nvida drivers all over the place. Not just GPU.
Then after a couple more updates, some of the GPU drivers have just disappeared from programs and features.... BUT they are still there in Device Manager. Then if you update Intel GPU (which it will want to) your Nvidia Physix driver will disappear from Programs and Features.... So now you are left with just the Nivida GPU driver in Programs and Features.

Why does any of this matter? Because the drivers are still installed, you can see all of them in device manager. They have just been at least partly removed by either an installation conflict, a registry conflict or a driver conflict. And if this is happening and is easy for me to see... what else are they missing ?

Fresh install of windows... Do not update via Dell apps.... turn off auto scanning in Dell Support Assist. Update via windows update.

If this still causes issues, as soon as windows is installed pause windows update, and turn off auto scanning in Dell Support Assist.

Down load Nvidia drivers from Nvidia. Install then run windows update.

GPU back up and running. Pause windows updates and just unpause them once every 2 weeks, so it if something goes wrong or changes after an update it is very obvious what has occurred rather than it secretly installing conflicting drivers behind your back.

This is not the only low level BIOS / driver integration issue in Dell Hardware/Software. You can see a similar thing with the left speaker just stopping working (only fixable by back dating to an older driver ... which is not made easy ... or toggle audio on and off in the bios).

Slight correction ^ I updated the Nvidia vbios, but as said elsewhere you must ensure you have the Nvidia card showing correctly first. See above.

Hi Jim Me,

I'm afraid I didn't have the opportunity to try this out at the time, but I feel like this issue is slightly different. You describe having NVidia stuff appearing in device manager, I see nothing there. There are no NVidia devices or drivers or anything, even after factory installs of windows and even after a full motherboard replacement.

I used XPS 15 7590 and i have the same problem. XPS 15 7590 often overheats due to lack of cooling fans so I'm afraid the GPU was affected. You should take your computer for repair and try not to let the computer overheats.
