XPS 15 9510, BIOS 1.2.6, Touchpad and mouse freeze

XPS 15 9510

XPS 15 9510

After my System received the latest BIOS Update - Version 1.26 - both the Touch Pad and the Bluetooth Mouse I'm using freeze repeatedly. The freezes are between one second and 10 seconds. Work is not possible.

Here's what I did to try and solve the issue:

1) Updating all drivers - didn't work

2) Re-installed my system and updated drivers - didn't work

3) Trying several power management settings in Windows and Device Manager that were suggested in old posts that describe the same problem (https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/xps/xps-15-9500-cursor-freeze/647f9444f4ccf8a8de680984) - didn't work

The only suggested solution I didn't yet try was disabling C-State in BIOS. This might be a workaround, but not a solution since it would likely mess up the runtime of the system when on battery.

In the BIOS I noticed that I received two updates recently. One on Jan. 16th, and one on Jan 20th. With those updates I'm now on Version 1.26. This version includes a security fix and is hence not down-gradable - at least this is what the description of this update says.

The date of the last BIOS update coincides exactly with the day I first noticed the freezes.

SOLUTION: It is obvious for me that the BIOS update caused the issue. Hence, the proper solution is for Dell to provide an Update that fixes the issue.

TEMPORARY FIX: Using an USB Mouse works (cable Mouse). But due to limited number of ports, this is just a temporal workaround.

According to the user @MAltus , these steps fixed the issue with the touchpad/mouse:

  1. Open Device Manager on your computer.
  2. Navigate to System devices section.
  3. Access properties of Serial IO I2C Host Controllers.
  4. In Power Management tab, disable "Allow the Computer to turn off this device to save power".

Please test this solution and let us know.

Additional Note about Selected Answer: I just had a Windows Update changing my Power Settings again. So if your touchpad gets stuck again suddenly, double check in the device manager. The Power Management might be active again.

To resolve the issue of the touchpad freezing, disable power saving settings for the specific HID devices:

  1. Open device manager (windows key + X and select Device Manager)
  2. Go to Human Interface Devices (HID) and expand the list.
  3. Search for I2C HID device
  4. Right-click I2C HID device and select Properties.
  5. The properties window is displayed, go to Power Management tab.
  6. Clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Follow the steps from point three with these additional HID devices:
    • Intel(R) HID Even Filter
    • Both USB Input Devices
  9. Restart Computer, the problem should be resolved.

If you have determined that BIOS firmware was the cause, why not reverting back to previous firmware version.  This is the information listed for firmware 1.26.0 driver page, Once the BIOS is upgraded, you cannot downgrade the BIOS to version 1.6.2 or earlier. BIOS downgrades are restricted when there are security updates and important fixes with earlier versions that impact the functionality of the system.  The previous version is 1.25.0.

@Chino de Oro I misunderstood the wording: "Once the BIOS is upgraded, you cannot downgrade the BIOS to version 1.6.2 or earlier. BIOS downgrades are restricted when there are security updates and important fixes with earlier versions that impact the functionality of the system". I think I missed the "." in the 1.6.2 version. So 1.25 should be fine I guess.

Anyways, I still hope for a fix. If 1.26 fixes a security issue, it would be nice to have the update eventually.

Also take note of the If in my comment.  Reverting to previous firmware version may or may not fix the issue.  With or without your request, Dell still issues new firmware updates eventually.  But, waiting for a fix by your assumption may get disappointed.

Just pointing out the possibility to go back to previous firmware and hopefully that might resolve your issue.  Although the firmware release saying security updates and keeping your system from running into issue, but, not jumping on every firmware release may help your system from issue as well.  It's a preference choice.

Hi all,

In accordance with the engineering team's guidance, please update the touchpad firmware and inform us if this resolves the issue.

A little update: I now tested BIOS 1.25 and 1.24 by downgrading. But it didn't solve the issue. During the downgrading, I saw a few logs on the screen where it said that some component is already up to date. So I'm not sure that everything that was changed by 1.26 was downgraded. Also, I made sure to disable the automatic BIOS updates in the BIOS. Otherwise it would directly go back to 1.26 ;-)

The current state of the Problem: BIOS update 1.26 most likely messed up the power management - it was the only update of the day that the issues first started. Downgrading doesn't solve the issue for me. I have now bought a cable mouse as an intermediate solution. Also, just to emphasize: it happens with the Touchpad and Bluetooth mouses, not just the Touchpad. I will still test Dells suggested solution, but I don't have much hope.

Still hoping for another BIOS Update that properly addresses the issue. I will also contact support directly as soon as I have some time. I'll keep you updated.

@ChiroGeek8739c0 On Adobe I also noticed it first. But it also happens on other Software for me. First I thought it was a problem with Lightroom and some Graphics settings.

But I also reinstalled the complete system and had the issue before I added Lightroom again.

@mibreit-photo , follow recent post from DELL-Nat M to update the touchpad firmware.

January 31st, 2024 09:30

@DELL-Nat M  This did not solve the problem. The touch pad feels even more sluggish now.

Let me emphasize the following: It is both the TouchPad and Bluetooth Mouses that get stuck. When they are stuck - for several seconds - keyboard and cable mouse work properly. So, it is not a load problem, rather a problem with the power management. It seems that since the BIOS update, TouchPad and Bluetooth get turned off quite regularly in certain situations. I couldn't yet find a correlation between which apps cause it. But my feeling is that if I work under load and constantly use the TouchPad / Mouse, it works better. After I now finished typing this, I had to wait 10 seconds for the TouchPad to respond again.

This is not acceptable and I hope you can investigate this further and check what changes were done in those recent BIOS updates.

Since I have already reinstalled the system, downgraded the BIOS, updated several drivers (including TouchPad, Graphics, and several Chipset drivers), I'm running out of options.

I'm IT for my company and we have Precision 5560s (on 1.18.0 BIOS, not up to date) and 5770s ( on 1.21.0 BIOS, up to date) that have this problem. I'm starting to look into this and I randomly stumbled on this forum. I'll troubleshoot this today and share a solution if I have one.

The first thing I'm going to try is disabling Bluetooth Power Management in Device Manager. This setting, "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" was under Bluetooth in Device Manager. Now it's under Human Interface Devices. Right-click your device and hit Properties -> Power Management. Uncheck the setting and hit ok. I guess do this for all the devices under Human Interface Devices.

Let me know if this works for you.

P.S: Dell Bluetooth has always been complete and utter garbage. Dell updates in general are horrendous and inconsistent.

Also, I saw a comment on Adobe and mouse issues. I didn't read much into the comment but we have a problem with the mouse scroll wheel in InDesign not working. It appears that this only happens to Microsoft mice. Switching to a Dell mouse alleviated any mouse problems in InDesign.
