XPS 15-9570, Audio crackling and popping

I have an issue that renders the audio on this laptop unusable.

I have a new XPS 9570, and occasionally (I stress that word because 75% of the time there is no issue) when playing audio, either through the built in speakers or through the audio jack, there is a loud popping and crackling noise that accompanies the audio. This renders any audio generated by the laptop unusable.

Because the issue is not always present, it is very hard to debug since you can't know if the issue was actually fixed, or just temporarily gone.

Testing I have done thus far:

When playing a continuous tone, such as generated by  , the issue is still present.

The crackling and popping increases with system volume, so if I turn the volume up on the laptop, the crackling becomes louder.

I have reflashed the BIOS to the newest version, uninstalled realtek, reinstalled realtek, disabled wave-maxx-audio (or whatever it is called), and tried using the built in windows drivers. Nothing has worked.

And note that when playing from bluetooth, there is no issue. So it is not a software issue in that way.

Very disappointing that on such an amazing laptop (it truly is amazing), an integral part of it is basically useless.

Frank Azor from Dell twitted saying that a solution is coming soon:

I'm grateful for the continued hard work to resolve this issue.  I've been following this thread since it's inception hoping a solution would be made before I purchased a 9570 to replace my aging but very reliable L521X.  Sound quality is critical to the work I do and must be absolutely as good as possible.

Please persevere in getting a constant and consistent resolution.  I'm growing a bit tired and impatient and eager to really utilize all of the wonderful things the 9570 can do.  But I am holding back on a purchase until this issue is fixed.

Thats really what makes this so painful. This is an amaaaazing device otherwise so once this audio is fixed (praying) I feel it'll be perfection.

The strangest thing is that I was working with my XPS 9570 since June 2018 without any sound issues. After installing the last BIOS update 1.8.1, I suddenly experience the same problem as mentioned here. I can't believe it that some people are living with this issue since many months. I have this issue for 3 days and I want to punch a hole in the wall. 😡

I've got this problem along with many, many others.

I can't start to comprehend how I can still put up with this  device (maybe because it cost me a fortune and I've got no other choice?)

I totally regret buying it.

For me the nightmare has stopped since the recent (roughly one week ago) BIOS/driver update in SupportAssist.

Anyone else observe the same behaviour? Because at this point I don't trust my own perception of the problem anymore (I have no conscious memory of changing any audio settings due to crackling in the last week or so, but I won't take that as a definite sign).

Actually managed to totally fix the issue by reverting back to a previous driver from late last year. The recent BIOS update messed it up again and i am back to square one, damning on Dell's part, something seriously needs to be done about this.

Hi, I was dealing with this audio issue for months, until I finally called Dell support. The technician replaced my mainboard. I still had some monitor blinking and laptop freezing (temporarily for several seconds) issues, so I followed his recommendation and 1) updated BIOS, 2) updated SSD firmware and 3) reinstalled Window 10.

No more audio crackling. And no more freezing.

Anyway, I still have the monitor blinking issue, audio device still occasionally stops working completely and now my Killer wifi card refuses to establish secured connection with google.com. So still not entirely happy with XPS 9570.

I am so sad that I didn't find this forum and read this thread before tonight. If you look for the thread I started titled: "Warranty, tech support and PC problems", you can see that this audio crackling and popping on my new XPS 15-9570 started a cascading series of problems created by Dell support technicians who are apparently not aware of this issue at all! What started out as annoying static in my speakers has left me today with a PC that has no audio at all (red x on icon) a corrupt OS, apps rendered inoperable, and Dell support now unable to even access my PC remotely to help. Two different phone support techs and one in-home service call and now a completely hosed PC because of what began as a known issue. Only problem was that no Dell tech support personnel knew of it and the consumers who bought this PC were not made aware of it. Had I known, or tech support known, I wouldn't be sitting here this morning with a dead XPS 15-9570 that's still under warranty. There should have been a consumer recall. What should I expect from Dell now in regards to my dead PC? If this popping sound couldn't be fixed anyway, and a replacement may have the same issue eventually, how can I get a refund on a 6-month old PC? This seems unethical. I'm so disappointed to see this.

Today some drivers came out. Whether they change something?

I have had the same issue with the sound, sometimes a cracking scratchy noise, others a bass-line bubbling. I was under the impression it was incompatibility with the MaxxAudio software as it helps when this is switched off, but then the sound is very thin.

So after a few visits from a Dell engineer to try to resolve this (replacing the speakers didn't work) and a number of other issues (BSOD, RAM failure, vibrating fan), I am getting a replacement machine.

During this process I had uploaded a soundclip of the problem to the Dell Advanced Resolution Group and I received this reply earlier today:

'We have also received confirmation from our backend teams regarding the reported issue(noise) that they have managed to replicate it and assured us that it can be fixed through an audio driver update.

Please be informed, the fixes can be expected in the next update cycle once the issues have been confirmed to be resolved by our product teams.'

So there we have confirmation that there is a problem and that it is being looked at. Having seen the previous posts here and on a number of other forums it has taken Dell rather a long time to get to this point!

If you go to MS website to read up on the updates it seems like this one breaks even more audio devices. A known issue is the complete drop out of audio randomly and audio not working unless you select "default audio device". It even specifically says it will happen if you use "advanced" audio programs. ie Ableton live, protools and anything that uses ASIO4all I'm assuming.

Lovely, still useless for everything I bought it for.

No, the new drivers of today have not eliminated the sound problems...

Same experiences here, and finally this weekend while listening to some documentary on Youtube not even half cranked the subwoofer blew, and now it sounds terrible I can't even use the speakers.  Good thing about this laptop is my work provided it and they will send it to get fixed, but I'm done with it with this, the overall just cruddy quality of the sound anyway, overheating while gaming etc so I just placed an order for the New G7 17 with the RTX 2070, crossing fingers that one is a great one!

Same for me @philess ! I didn't dare reply on the forum until today fear of jinxing myself.

Don't get me wrong, the quality of sound is still **bleep** but I knew that buying this laptop, it wasn't well known for its speakers. But at least, I'm not experiencing the crackling anymore.

There is more Dell Updates today but I do not dare to insteall them fear it would come back...
