XPS 15 9570, touchscreen failed, SOLVED

Hi,

I just got my XPS 15 a few days ago and initially everything worked brilliantly. Then all of a sudden the touchscreen stopped working while I was configuring the machine for Windows/Linux dual boot. Took me days to figure it out. I tried all software approaches I could think of including all Windows Updates, all Dell Updates,  Factory Reset, Re-installing Windows but the symptoms remained the same:

  • Touchscreen did not respond in Windows or Linux.
  • Touchscreen did not show up in Device Manager.
    • Before re-installing windows it actually was listed under the hidden devices with code 45. This can happen when a USB device gets disconnected.
  • Touchscreen did not show up in BIOS settings.
  • There was an I2C HID Device with an error (code 10) in the Device Manager.

I eventually decided to open the back lid to see if there's something obvious I could see and sure enough there was. The touchscreen connector was not properly seated. I disconnected it and put it back but initially that didn't help. I then did the same again and also disconnected the battery and then held down the power button for 30s. This did the trick. It's now working normally and all the above symptoms are gone.

Please do take care if you decide to try this. You may void your warranty. Read the maintenance manual on how to get the lid open and how to disconnect the battery.

Here is a picture of the connector:

Not sure if the image in my previous post shows up correctly. Here's a link to the image:
