XPS 17 9700 Battery Performance - Initial Software Configuration - Recommended Solution
Hello DELL Community,
i wanted to share my experience with my new XPS 17 9700, because i hope it will help someone.
When i first received my XPS i configured it using the pre-installed software. Following are some bullit experiences.
-Battery Runtime maximum 2hrs
-Dell Power Manager has incorrect programming (Silent Mode spins up the Fans etc)
-CPU continuesly ran at close to maximum Intel Turbo Mode with over 90 Degress Temperature
In short, i was very close to returning it. No battery management setting helped this issue. I reinstalled the system using the onboard-restore options, with the same effect.
Solution: Clean Win 10 Install of a USB drive. Installation of only the drivers and the Dell Color Manager, nothing else. Dont even think of using the Support Assist Software. Now the system runs very quiet and gets about 6.5 to 8hrs of usage and will stay.
I also had to use some electric tape to get the trackpad from making a weird noise. All in all a terrible experience for a flagship laptop. With some "tuning" its wonderful and i am sure it will serve me well. Apart from the trackpad issue, its a solidly engineered device with horrible Dell software.
So, if you have a problem with low battery and horrid thermal performance, give it a try.
Best regards from Switzerland and stay healthy and safe
Florian
