XPS 17 9720 XTU greyed out (HK CPU)

XPS 17 9720

Hey guys!

I have a dell xps 17 9720 with a 12900hk. I usually buy a xps 15 every release but I upgraded this time to get a HK processor, and in hopes a bigger chassis would provide better thermals.

Now, my understanding was HK is a mobile unlocked cpu. Since dell has awful settings for voltage and power use I wanted to give underbolting a shot since I never really exceed 10% usage, so I was willing to drop the core clock a bit as well. To be clear, the issue is the laptop gets unbeaeably hot especially during charging. The dumb part is, its caused by the CPU turboing super hard for maybe 2 seconds, which shoots up the temps by 20-30 degrees. I dont need this turbo, like I dont understand why dells default turbo settings are so bad the laptop cant possibly handle it without throttling.

This is manageable but what is the real problem: The unlocked cpu is locked! Dell has some bios lock in place that does not let me change any clocks or voltages?? Why are you guys selling a unlocked cpu when its locked? This is a laptop that cost me over 3 grand this is not okay... I would like to know if there is a bios i can downgrade to which restores the ability to adjust these settings.

Again clarification, this a H'K' cpu that is locked by dell to be just an H cpu...

You can also see the info page here, it says I have an HK cpu but the model shows up as H and says I need a K cpu... I am so confused other laptops with 12900hk dont have this issue... If this is intentional this is a straightup scam!

The voltage on most Intel 10th generation and all 11th gen and up CPUs cannot be adjusted, period. They're all locked against undervolting. .
As for overclocking, while it is supported on some Alienware systems, it never has been (and is not on the model you purchased) on the XPS line. The presence of the "K" CPU in this model line probably has more to do with market availability than it does anything to do with overclocking support.
