XPS 9310 Docking Station
Hello,
I am looking at options for a docking station, all seem quite expensive and out of my price range.
Does anyone know of a docking station that is affordable, perhaps third party, that still works well for a new XPS 9310?
Please note that I only want it for business type of work, MS 365, internet, no 4K required and I will not be gaming, just need to connect to one 27 inch monitor.
Hope someone has some ideas.
Thanks

@Brad88888 It doesn't matter in this specific case, but when talking about a display you want to run, the resolution is what matters, not the physical size. 27-inch displays are available as 1080p, 1440p, 4K, and 5K, and in some scenarios that difference matters.
But if cost is the main concern here, then this USB-C to DisplayPort adapter will allow you to run a DisplayPort cable to your display (hopefully it has a DP input) and also has a USB-C port for power passthrough. And then for everything else, you could get USB 3.0 hub with however many ports you need. I'm admittedly not sure what all "everything else" is in your case since you didn't actually specify what functionality or peripherals you needed to use, but most anything can be connected to a USB hub, even Ethernet or audio adapters if needed.
Compared to a docking station, you lose the ability to run multiple displays (unless your display supports daisy chaining), and you have two cables to connect to your system instead of one, and you don't have a separate power source, which means you'll need to keep using your system's own power adapter, whereas a docking station would have its own power source and would therefore free up your system's power adapter to be parked somewhere else you spend a lot of time or kept in your bag as a dedicated travel charger so that you wouldn't have to unpack it and pack it back up as you came and went from your desk. But maybe that's worth it for the cost savings here, and if you to get a bit closer to dock convenience, you could just buy another USB-C wall charger that supported at least 45W output, which is what the XPS 13 9310 requires for optimal performance.
Otherwise, there are multi-purpose hubs like this one, which could get everything running through a single port on your system and even allow you to take it with you in case having these types of ports on the go might be useful. But if you went this route, you might still want a powered USB 3.0 hub depending on the types of peripherals you wanted to use (and how many ports you needed), and if you wanted to run system power through the adapter, you'd want a USB-C power source with at least 60W output since the hub reserves 15W of capacity for itself when it's connected to an external source. Otherwise you could connect the power adapter directly to the system and run the multi-purpose adapter on the other port having it rely on system power, but in that case you're using both system ports AND you might find that the USB ports on the adapter won't support high powered USB devices very well. But even that might be ok depending on what you connected to those USB ports, and here again that can be where a powered USB 3.0 hub comes into play. You could connect that hub to this multi-purpose adapter, for example.

Hello,
Thanks for responding, I am looking for a real docking station for my XPS 9310, not really an adapter type. Apologies for not being more descriptive in my original post.
I don't need portable, it would stay at my desk. In terms of money, I am willing to spend up to $250 (please note that I am in Canada). It would be nice to charge my laptop will plugged in, be able to use two monitors, have a couple USB ports for mouse and keyboard and have an ethernet plug in. 4K would be nice but not totally required.
You think there is something that I can find for this price?
Regards

@Brad88888 The XPS 13 9310 supports DisplayPort 1.4/HBR3 over USB-C as well as Thunderbolt. That has implications for possible display setups depending on the dock you select. Since you mentioned dual displays:
In terms of the WAVLINK dock you found, I don't have any personal experience with it, but the specs suggest that it should work. The XPS 13 9310 only needs a 45W power source, so that dock's somewhat low 60W max power delivery wouldn't be an issue. Other dock vendors you may want to look at though would be CalDigit, Plugable, StarTech, and Anker. I'm not sure which of them have a retail presence in Canada, but they all have a solid reputation for quality products, so if you can find a product that has the connectivity you want within your target price range, they would be worth considering.
