"HDD Replacement Is Not Valid" Error When Updating Bios

Hi all,

I am running an old Optiplex 755 Desktop with Windows 7, and am having a boot issue with the error message "HDD replacement is not valid, continued use may....". I first dealt with this last year when I bought this unit and installed a non-WD hard drive. I changed the jumper settings to eliminate the warning, but now am getting it again when trying to update the BIOS from a USB stick. No idea what's best here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :emotion-15:

Thanks, but I fixed the issue last year using instructions like this when I first installed the hard drives. Now I get the error again when booting into DOS from a USB stick, to update the BIOS. I don't get the error otherwise, just with USB. I think the system is still set to "Do Not Report". I can check, but what else can I do?

riven2000,

Unfortunately, I do not have any other information. Also, the system is not supported with Windows 7 through Dell. There are no Windows 7 drivers available for downloading on the Dell Website for the Optiplex 755.

This error is specific to DESKTOP SFF AND USFF drives. Samsung and Western Digital Drives.   SSD's will give this error.  havent tried a samsung SSD however.

It has nothing to do with windows version as its in BIOS.

Windows 7 works fine on the GX620/745/755/760/780 but its not supported.  This means you have to use Vista or 7 drivers for the hardware.  Audio and the AMT HECI SOL and chipset Drivers are usually all that is needed.

HDD replacement is invalid has to do with the vendor of the hard drive thermal Profile.

"HDD replacement is not valid, continued use may result in long term HDD reliability issues, please press F1 if you would like to continue, and/or call Dell for replacement HDD"

'HDD replacement is not valid' Message on Dell Optiplex Computer - KB Article - 329305

In essence, it's a "feature" put in because of thermal considerations.   There are at least 2 workarounds:

a) set keyboard errors not to be displayed -- the HD warning will be displayed, but the PC will continue to boot without requiring pressing F1

b) connect the original 2nd HD to the eSATA connector -- no message at all, but then there's an extra 30 sec - 1 min delay during POST in that case .
