No one covers batteries for more than a year with a standard or extended warranty.  No one - including HP.  The only thing you'll get with HP is poorer hardware reliability and worse support - look before you make that mistake.  There are certainly alternatives to Dell - some are indeed better with hardware and/or support - but none of them will cover the battery for more than a year (though Lenovo does let you buy a battery performance extension) and HP is by far the worst out there for reliability and support.

There is absolutely nothing confusing about Dell's battery warranty statement:

"Portable computer batteries carry the lesser of either a 1-year limited hardware warranty or the length of the limited hardware warranty for the Dell computer with which the battery is shipped."

The problem isn't the warranty - it's that you didn't read it before you bought it.

So, if you're looking for a battery with more than a 1-year warranty, Lenovo is it - for $129 you can buy a 3-year battery protection warranty.  Not coincidentally, that's just about the cost of a replacement battery -- so, that should give you an indication that Lenovo, like everyone else, expects the battery to last about 18-24 months -- which is standard for a lithium ion battery.

Apple's newest models have what they tout as a "5 year" battery - and in fact, it hopefully will be since you can't change it yourself.  Steve Jobs isn't betting his kids' college funds on that though - the warranty on the battery is 12 months, even if you buy a  3-year Apple Care plan.

I purchased a new Dell Latitude from a college bookstore on 2/9/15. They advertised a three year warranty.  When I registered the computer I learned the warranty already started on 8/22/13 and expires on 8/23/16.  The computer was bran new out of the box. The bookstore spent over an hour trying to correct the situation. They contacted their middleman who told them once the computer left the dock and went to him the warranty went into effect. The book store could do nothing about it  after about two hours on the phone with either dell or their middleman. They offered to refund my money because they advertised the computer with a three year warranty. I took a good deal on a gift certificate instead. They are in the process of sending their dell computers back to their middleman and dropping Dell from their bookstore.

I would call Dell about this problem as it's not the store's responsibility but that of DELL.

I live in Belgium and every item bought in Belgium has a two year guaranty. i have spoken to my DELL salesman and he agrees that they have to honor it.  So, persist with phone calls where you can.

I have owned several brands of laptops and never ever had a battery fail until this one - my first and last Dell
