Primary Video "AUTO" not Working

I carefully followed this FAQ -

I have a 3100 running XP Home Edition with the on-board Intel graphics.  I am installing a nVIdia PCI FX5500 with 256 MB.

When I connect the monitor to the new card, I can see the boot up, but not XP.  When I connect to the on-board video, I do not see boot up, but see XP.  It looks like "AUTO" is not working the way it should.

I am tempted to boot up with the monitor connected to the on-board, and "disable" the on-board graphics through Device Manager, but am worried that I may not see any video if there is a problem.  If the on-board is "disabled" in Device Manager, and I change it to "On-Board" in the BIOS, will I be OK?

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks.
