THIS COMPUTER IS TERRIBLE. I purchased mine a year and a half ago. Now the power adapter will not stay in the computer. I was FORCED to turn my laptop into a DESKTOP. I wouldn't advise anyone to buy a Dell. I called tech support they want to just replace the motherboard. I noticed that all of the new dell laptops have 2 year warranties. I think Dell knows something is not telling the public about it. Take my advice for what its worth. I will never buy another DELL.

OMG I wish I had read this forum before buying my Dell Inspiron 5160. I to am having the same problems. They said it was adapter I paid 80 bucks and it wasn't the problem, now they say it's my motherboard to the tune of paying 250 for just the part:-( I am not so sure this will fix the problem from what I am reading. I have put this all in the hands of a lawyer and I will be glad to give any of you that lawyers name if you continue to have no results with Dell. I agree this has to be a KNOWN problem with Dell and they should have done the RIGHT thing and had a recall on them. This is just not a way to do business and I have bought my last Dell.

I am having the same ditto problem.  I bought my 5160 in January of last year and the computer does not powers on anymore.  I called Dell and they told me that I have to replace the motherboard.  Since, I needed the Laptop, I paid $262 for the motherboard and another $50 for techsupport (since my warranty expired).  I think this is a known problem that Dell is not willing to pay for.  For sure, I will never in this life would buy a Dell.

Please let me know if any one is able to get their money back from Dell.

    Thanks

I to believe Dell knows that whatever they used in these Inspirons in question was bad or very cheaply made. I have bought the motherboard and we had it installed here and guess what it didn't correct the problem but I bet when I ship this off to Dell they end up saying its a bad motherboard. I paid $249.00 for a reconditioned motorboard. I am so disgusted with the whole thing and if I didn't love this laptop when it worked I would throw it out but I have a lot of extras on it and I use it everyday. I will let you know of a laywer who is collecting info for customers who own this paticular model and are having problems. Good luck

Well, I am glad you posted this one.  I received my motherboard from Dell Yesterday.  Instead of replacing the motherboard I am going to return the motherboard to Dell and buy a new laptop.  I ain't wasting any more money on this piece of sh**.
BTW, I am a project manager with a major IT company where I make and influence decision as to what hardware we buy.  In the past I have recommended Dell to lot my clients, but not any more.  I think Dell is one cheap company who all they care about is their bottom line.  I don't like their customer service either.
Like I said, I ain't buying Dell in this life.

    Hi
Well unfortunately I made the mistake of buyin the Mother Board and replacing it, however it still didn't work and solve my problem. Now I open mymail and have an email that says IF the MB and the A/C adapter I purchased are found t be bad I will get a refund. This is absoulutely not what I was told when I specifically asked if this does not fix my problem can I return this for a full refund and they said YES you have 21 days and now this.
You are so right, Dell is all about Dell now and nothing about the customer unless of course you spend a fortune with them and then you may even get an English speaking person. I am not a prejudice person but it really frustrates me that you're stressed out enough about your problem and then when you need help you can't understand the person you are talking to...

I would like to retract my statement about their customer service.  I think those folks are doing a great job.  I just received a call from them and they made sure that the return of the motherboard was going to go fine.

I to was assured the return and refund would go smoothly but something tells me its not going to now:-( I Did you use a Dell charge for the services. I am thinking I should have used another type of payment method due to the fact if this isn't repaired I am NOT paying the bill for services not rendered.

Like I said I am just frustrated to the point now that I don't know if I am coming or going:-) Please let me know how things work out and I will do the same. Good luck in purchasing a new laptop

Nope, I did not use Dell charge card.  They tried talking me into getting the Dell charge card.  But I was so mad at losing my laptop that I did not wanted to apply for the Dell charge card.  The charges went on my credit card.  I will make sure I get that money back from Dell thru my credit card company.

    Good Luck to you man.

I just bought a Compaq laptop this morning.  Like I said I work in IT.  If I don't want a computer, it's like I lost both my hands.  I hope compaq is better then Dell  :-).

There are options available where you can take the hard drive out of your inspirion and transfer all the important files to your new laptop.  Atleast that's what I did.  I had very important stuff on my Inspiron.

    Ciao

Wish I knew this 5 months ago when my warranty ran out.  But then there wasn't a problem.  Did this AC problem every get resolved?  As anyone mentioned the fact that everyone has the same problem and the motherboard isn't the issue?  Curious to know how this ends.  May try to call in the morning.  Of course it works fine when i tug on the cord to the right and don't move.  Please all keep us all posted.  Thanks.

PS-know when your warranty runs out, cause you can't extend it after the fact.  They tend to keep that to themselves too.  At least an email notification or something.
