Numlock always on after bootup

On my Inspiron 2650, XPSP3, the Numlock is always on when it boots up so that I have to turn it off before trying to login so the proper keypresses register.

I looked in the BIOS to see if it could be turned off there as I've seen on many other systems, but there is no option for that. I looked in the Software section of the Dell Support site, but didn't see any utility there to run in Windows to allow controlling this.

So how do I turn off the Numlock so it doesn't turn on automatically upon bootup?

    Hi Jonathan,

    If you don't have any options in BIOS, you can perform a simple registry edit.

    1. Click Start, click Run, and type regedit to open the Windows registry editor.
    2. In the registry, open the below folders.

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\
      Control Panel\
      Keyboard\

    3. Within the keyboard folder, you should have a string value named "InitialKeyboardIndicators" with a value of 0, 1, or 2. Below is the explanation of each of these values.

      0 = Num Lock is turned OFF after the logon.
      1 = Disable Num Lock.
      2 = Numlock is turned ON after  the logon.

    Tell me if it works.

    Cheers,

    Actually it was in the HKEY_USERS\.Default key which makes sense since it was happening at bootup even before I logged in and that's under control of the .Default user key, but it was set to 2. So I changed it to 0 which should fix the problem. Thanks for the knowledge about the registry key! I don't know how it got set that way and I'm surprised there's nothing in the BIOS or any Dell utility to run to change it.

    None of the settings work.  Any other suggestions?
