I think my Inspiron 6000 CD drive is going out.  But it's only messing up a one disc so far and it passed the F12 diagnostics and no errors in device manager.

After last night's problems (see original below) I installed another printer and the cd didn't make the bad loud noise at all and installed fine.

 

I have an Inspiron 1501 that happens to have the same Phillips SDVD8820 in it, so I'll swap it in and try to install Trend Micro with it.  I already installed the Trend Micro on the Ins 1501.

Hi,  Having a problem with a Phillips DVD+-RW SDVD8820 drive on an Inspiron 6000.  Trying to install Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2008.

 

1.  I installed Trend Micro in another notebook ok and can read the cd on my desktop pc.

2.  6000 will read and burn another cd ok.

 

When I put the cd in the drive it makes a very loud noise like an airplane taking off.  100x worse than usual.  The first time the install started ok and said it had to remove AVG.  It did and then restarted the pc.

 

After it restarted it continued and then it had to remove Spybot S&D.  It did and then restarted the pc.  This time the screen stayed black and the cd drive kept making the loud noise and never would start the rest of the install.  I pushed the button to open the drive which it finally did and then Welcome screen came up.

 

Tried the cd again,  it kept trying to run and eventually got a message unable to launch Install - check cdrom drive.

 

I ran the F12 diagnostics and the drive passed.

 

When my husband came home, I put it in to show him and he kept opening and shutting the cd drive while it was installing and just whirling loud to make it continue.  It eventually finished installing, but the program doesn't work right. 

 

What should I do now?  The cd reads in another pc and the 6000 cd drive works ok on other cds.
