Cannot resolve 'Sonic Studio DLA' problem when upgrading to Vista from XP Pro

Question

I've been to the farthest corners of the Web, not to mention these forums, trying to find out how to resolve the following problem:

I'm attempting to upgrade my Dell Optiplex GX280 from Xp Pro to Vista. During the initial compatibility check, I receive the error:

"Close Windows installation, go to Programs, and uninstall the following programs: Sonic Studio DLA"

1) I do not have Sonic Studio DLA installed
2) I do not have any Sonic software installed
3) I do not have any Roxio software installed
4) I do not have IBM DLA installed
5) I have searched through the registry, and there is no mention of DLA, Roxio or Sonic Studio

I have been to the Roxio site where there is a "patch" available that may or may not be relevant (some forum messages suggest it might be). This patch is d2d3290.exe and is apparently for Dell PCs.

In fact what this application does is to install Roxio Drag to Disk, which seems highly inadvisable (I thought I was trying to get rid of it, not install it!).

Despite that I did run and install it, tried to upgrade to Vista afterwards, but with the same error, so went and uninstalled it.

I would welcome any advice on what next to try.

Have you think on a clean install instead of a upgrade???   Try to use the the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

No: I want to upgrade, rather than do a clean install. That shouldn't be a problem, in principle! Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Why would it prompt you to uninstall that if you do not have this installed? Have you throughly checked every place and did a keyword search using Windows Search?

I do not know why it thinks I have Sonic DLA installed, since I do not.

There is nothing I can find on my system that suggests otherwise.

As far as I can see this is an error in the Vista upgrade process. How do I work around it?

I downloaded and installed the cleanup tool you recommended.

It looked awfully dangerous to me, with lots of warnings etc.. It looks like a last resort tool.

It is certainly possible that the system may have been delivered with Roxio/Sonic software, which I removed: I cannot remember. Dell does tend to add a lot of (to me) unwanted software which I immediately uninstall when I receive a machine.

I am now doing an in depth search of all files and directories on all disks in the machine, as someone else suggested.

I'll update when/if I find something.

What burning software was installed on your system when you received it? Does the control panel / programs have DLA or drag to disc listed?

I would need to check the delivered config of my system, but right now there is no DLA or drag to disc program installed.

I did find a folder in Application Data called "Sonic", that contained what appeared to be the remnants of an installation. I have now deleted that. Surely the Vista upgrade tool wouldn't consider that to be an installation?

I'll update later if/when I get any further. Thanks for all the suggestions.

There's no listed any Sonic or Roxio.

which I think is the only software installed... By I know Roxio is an application almost always come...
