recovering Windows XP initialization file

Dell XPS 400 with Windows XP Media Edition.

A McAfee scan found Katusha and deleted/quarantined several infected files.  A re-start was requested, I complied and since then get a blue screen (stop 0x0000006B).

I have the OS recovery dvd and want to repair the deleted/quarantined files.  I cannot afford to trash the data on the hard drive.

I know that I need to repair the Windows initialization file, but am not sure how best to do that.

I would be very grateful for any ideas.
