AW3821DW, compatible with AMD GPU?

Hi,

I'm thinking to buy this AW3821DW monitor. But I have an AMD RX580 GPU that I don't want to change just now. Is this model compatible with AMD FreeSync? I'm reading that new monitors should be compatible but not sure is it.

    Hi

    According to the news, all gsync monitors released in 2020 should be compatible with freesync, maybe is compatible but not referenced in the manual?

    The AW3821DW sales site never mentions AMD FreeSync. The online AW3821DW User's Guide never mentions AMD FreeSync. It only states that the AW3821DW is a Nvidia G-Sync monitor. This means that Dell has not tested or validated the AW3821DW with AMD FreeSync.

    It doesn't seem very prudent to purchase a monitor that cost almost $2000 dollars, has specialized circuitry built in to mate up specifically with Nvidia RTX cards and not use it to its full performance capabilities.

    As already stated, Dell has not tested it with and will not support any problems you have using that monitor with FreeSync, so if a problem arose you would be on your own with no support assistance from Dell and a very expensive monitor.

    @franklyrg

    LG makes a comparable Freesync Premium Pro monitor using the same panel.  If you're set on AMD Freesync you might try checking out https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-38gn950-b-gaming-monitor

    Even then I'd still consider an upgrade over the rx580 to fully utilize the features in such a nice $1.6K monitor.

    One other thing is this is such a new monitor, if you like the Alienware you could wait a bit to see what experiences are reported on this and other forums, reviews, etc. of people with amd freesync and this monitor.  Officially, no, but unofficially, tbd.  I'm sure other people have this same question.  In that timeframe another sale may come up.  I think this monitor you just mentioned was selling for $1450 a few days ago direct from Dell, right)?  Worst case scenario you can always use this monitor without utilizing freesync or gsync until you get a gpu upgrade if you find it at a great deal.

    Thank you for your answer.

    Actually, i just ordered the monitor because I had a massive discount to use in dell.

    So far i will try to use it with that graphic card and see if I can have free sync working or if is working ok for games. I have planned to change the GPU for a Nvidia 3070 when i can find stock and "normal prices"

    • Can you please report your findings regarding amd gpu and vrr as I am interested in getting this display but don't want to be locked into one particular gpu maker just as the competition is back. I will probably keep this display for at least a decade and who knows what gpu will be best in 4-6 years time.

    Mine too Pulled the trigger on it. But I'm on 970 atm. So won't be able to test freesync. I am heavily leaning towards 6800xt. So if freesync works... Can't get a gpu atm though so if Nvidia releases 3080ti with more vram than 3080 I might go for that instead. But still very interested to know the answer to freesync on a g sync ultimate panel

    Hi

    Looks that is compatible and working correctly. I'm not an expert and i didn't expend to much time in the configuration but so far looks good.
