U4320Q, external speakers volume control issue

I just got a Dell U4320Q and started having compatibility issues with it right off the bat (after having an LG 43UN700 working seamlessly in my workflow). This time the issue is that I cannot control the volume of my external speakers plugged in into the monitor. I called Dell support but they couldn't figure out how the monitor is supposed to work and the support folks were very unprofessional and ignorant

Specifically regarding my issue, there are actually 2 things that do not seem right:

1) Both the monitor's internal speakers and my external speakers are playing at the same time when I plug in my external speakers. When I change the volume, only the volume on the internal speakers is changed. This never happened on my LG monitor, the expected behaviour is the sound playing from the external speakers when they're plugged in and from the internal speakers otherwise.

2) I go to the monitor menu and disable the internal speakers (with my external speakers plugged in). Now only the external speakers are playing. Next, I try changing the volume and I'm seeing the volume bar changing the volume level but the actual volume of the speakers doesn't change. The expected behaviour is that changing the volume should indeed change the volume of the external speakers.

I'm a software developer and I usually prefer Dell products over other stuff... Hoping someone can help me to resolve this issue. Is this a defect of my monitor? Is this a bug that can be resolved with a firmware update? Or should I just return it and have peace with my LG monitor?
