CDRW & DVDRW Burn Errors

Hey everyone.  I just got a new XPS 630i a few weeks ago.  Nothing but problems with the burners - neither has burned a CD or DVD properly.  I lost E drive completely and went through all the steps before Dell determined the drive was bad.  So, Dell sent two new drives.  Well, not new, but refurbished which irritates me.  Anyway, I installed the new drives, the computer recognizes them, everything's good, right?  No.  I reinstalled Nero and neither still cannot burn a CD or DVD.  Tons of errors.  I then installed Roxio thinking maybe it was software.  No, more errors in Roxio.  Luckily I still have an external DVDRW that works great.  Previous to installing the new drives, I jumped through a lot of hoops.  I also deleted as told the upper and lower filters on the registry.  The tech guy at Dell says that if the new drives still don't work properly, I should reinstall the operating system.  This is a brand new machine - I shouldn't have to start from scratch.  Don't they test these things before they're shipped?  Drive D is a DVD/CDRW and Drive E is a DVDRW.  I feel this is a registry problem, but I'm running out of ideas.  The computer's OS is XP SP2.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.
