1. So, it's 8 years old . I suggest you be happy it still works. :Smile:

2. That Intel x58-chipset motherboard uses the old Socket-1366 processors  (i7-9x0 series). Your i7-960 is fine.

3. Not for i7-960 and other original parts (like tri-channel memory). Remember, it's Legacy-BIOS (non-UEFI) ... it only has SATA-2/300 and USB-2.0 (but you can install a USB-3.0 PCIe addin card).

Yeah, my Aurora-R1 runs great with GTX-1070 and SSD. Running Fallout-4 at 1080p on Ultra Settings.

Of course, my Aurora-R6 does it all a little better.  :Smile:

1. Yes it still works, but also with the new Gtx 1070 the System is not running stable FPS even on mid/low settings.

I think it’s time for an upgrade, the System is 8 / 9 years old.

Your R1 x58 socket 1366 motherboard only supports so many CPUs, all in the 9xx Family; the 960 approaches the mid-top end, where better CPUs are

• Gulftown 970 980 980x 990x Hex | Bloomfield 965 975 Quad

*965 975 | 980x 990x have the 6.4 QPI (the rest = 4.8)

*980x 990x are the best you can install, both require Bios A08 A09 A10 A11

All other newer CPUs require a new motherboard (+ new cooling retention ring); some newer CPUs require newer DDR3L or DDR4 memory (yours has DDR3)

i7 960 is a Gen1 Core CPU, Intel is now at Gen9, therefore you have 8 different families (w/ mainstream & extreme subsets) to consider & perhaps 6-8 different motherboard sockets dedicated between them; example, i9 9900k needs socket 1151 (z370 or z390) chipset

Here we see a recent Intel 8700k (z370) + 2080Ti motherboard swap; Alienboard is gone, now Alien case housing aftermarket board

R1 houses a micro-ATX form factor board (9.6 x 9.6) where typical top 'modern' CPUs are 6700k z170 | 7700k z270 | 8700k z370 | 9700k / 9900k z390, all are found in the newer Aurora R5 R6 R7 R8, while Intel 'extreme' & AMD ThreadRip CPUs exist in Area-51 R2-R7, there are lower-tier i3 i5 i7's in all flavors as well

Your x58 dead-ends at 975 980x 990x, try for 16-24Gb DDR3 1600 memory, & if you like your Alien case, consider buying it a new modern mthrbrd/cpu/mem/cooling ring (+ sell your X58 hardware) ... join AlienOwners & post for swap help there if/when the day comes
