Replacement fan problems

The system fan failed on my Dimension 8100 a few days ago. I called Dell and eventually navigated the joys of the customer support system to get to a real person who told me that Dell wouldn't supply replacement fans. They did however give me the name of a company in the UK who they claimed supplied approved Dell spares. So I bought a new fan - cost a fortune - and installed it. After a couple of days it has started to make a really annoying high pitched squeaking noise. My problem is that if I send this fan back I either have to spend £40 on another one while they're investigating the problem, or I have to be without a PC for several days - neither of which is attractive.

As the "official" source of Dell spares has been so miserable I wanted to get a cheap fan from somehere else. But looking at the Dell fan it seems to have some sort of thermistor or such like integrated with the basic fan. So I'm a bit wary of getting any old system unit fan from my local electronics shop in case it doesn't behave properly. Does anyone know if standard "off the shelf" fans are OK on Dimension 8100s? Or has anyone found a source of compatible non-squeaky fans in the UK?

6985R  should be the part number for a 92MM fan assembly for an 8100.  You should be able to get it from Dell Spare Parts

Did you notice that the OP didn't mention a "CPU0 Fan not found" or "Previous Fan Failure" message at boot?

Makes me think that he's got a fan that has the RPM sensor on it and is compatible with his BIOS already (like the 6985...)

Problem is that here in the UK Dell parts sales won't sell me a fan, they handed me over to some other organisation who provbided the nasty squeaky specimen I have now. I was hoping someone might know of fan suppliers or models that are electrically similar so I could get one from a 3rd party then fight for a refund later.

Yep, I had some BIOS messages about fan not found which was what alerted me to the fan failure in the 1st place.

    Nick,

I've not found a credible link here in the US (or for UK) for third party chassis/CPU fans that have the RPM sensor which will eliminate the 'fan failure' message ( as well as noise issues).

You might try to do a forum search here - perhaps someone has found a suitable/compatible fan and I've just missed the post.

    Good luck
