Bought my E1705 this year. For the most part it is a great computer but with a few annoyances. One is the matte WXGA (1440x900) screen. I opted for this screen at the time of purchase because it was cheaper than the glossy WUXGA and I had no idea of what the differences were other than resolution. Now though I am paying for it, but in a different way: lcd envy. Even a lowly Macbook has a far superior lcd to mine if one is not considering size. I kick myself now every time I see another notebook which has a glossy lcd screen, which is practically all of them. The colors are so much more deeper and alive. That is not even mentioning the better viewing angle for glossy screens. Even at a perpendicular viewing angle to my screen there are brightness/color abberations at the top and bottom of the screen. Movies are practically unwatchable at any vertical angle but straight in front of the screen. Games are similarly given funky hues.

Of course I know that the LCDs used for notebooks are still no match for a desktop monitor, but having now witnessed and realized how terrible matte is compared to glossy ( aka "TrueLife" ) I really wish there was something I could do about it.

So how can one change out the lcd in this behemoth that is the E1705? I gave Dell a call and all they could say was it would cost a lot, that I should just buy a new computer, and they wouldn't replace the lcd anyway (some about the screen being an integral and non-modular part of the system). I would be overjoyed if I could send my computer to Dell and have them replace the screen at near the upgrade cost at purchase, that being about $160 extra (now $128). My screen as it is is in perfect condition. No dead pixels, no scratches, very clean. I'm sure they could reuse it for some other person who hates the glossy. Dell, I'm begging you!
