Driver Win 7 32bit on OptiPlex 7010
Good morning
I'm trying to install Win 7 32bit on my old 64bit OptiPlex 7010 because I have to run an old software that only works with Win 32 bit. The operating system is installed, but some peripherals do not work (USB ports, graphics card ....) because the drivers are missing.
On the Dell site the drivers for Win 7 32bit are found, but when I try to install them the system does not allow me and tells me "The procedure AddDllDirectory entry point could not be found in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll".
Is it possible to find a solution?
Thank you very much
Paolo

Hi there!
I have a feeling you're running a quite outdated release of Win7, you might want to download a newer iso, and you haven't mentioned a service pack even once in your post, which makes me shiver a little bit: that's a huge security red flag, right there.
Anyway I seem to remember quite a few threads on this issue back in the day, you simply need to install the KB2533623 update, that was later included in some other cumulative update.
Here is some press from Dell about the issue (just know that it wasn't only about DUP, it also fixed it for any other driver package).
Or you could just get yourself a more up to date iso to begin with!
Hope this helps.

Many thanks Tatolino
In fact I have installed an original Dell Win 7 SP1, but stupidly I have not thought about the updates.
Once you have installed the 169 (!) necessary updates everything works perfectly.
Thanks again

I’m glad I could help!
I guess you probably already know it, but on the off chance you didn’t… Windows 10 has a quite good compatibility mode that allows you to install and run software designed for older Windows versions, starting from Win95 onwards.
You just right click on your exe file, select Properties -> Compatibility, and tick the box where it says Run this program in compatibility mode for: then you choose Win7 and you’re good to go. Or you can click Run compatibility troubleshooter in the very same tab and let the system decide the best way to handle it.
It would help you avoid the hassle of having to go through a hundred updates every time you need to reinstall your OS, and Win7 has almost run out its security updates support (Dec 2023), which is already quite thin as it is (and I'm being overly generous lol).

Thanks again Tatolino
Yes, I know of Windows 10 compatibility mode, and I use it frequently for old software.
The case in question, however, concerns an old electronic CAD software that I bought in 1995, which works with a hardware key on a parallel port. This software was updated until 2002 (then the Software House closed) and in the latest version it could only be installed with Windows XP Professional, but installation is also possible on Win 7 Professional in compatibility mode and actually installs even on Win 10, in XP compatibility mode.
However, the hardware key can no longer be used since the parallel port is no longer there, so in the following years a crack was developed that allowed us to continue using the software, obviously no longer supported. Well, the crack works well with Win 7 32 bit, but it doesn't want to work with Win 10 nor 32 nor 64 bit: in practice on Win 10 I can use the program but I can't save the work done.
Therefore already a few years ago I prepared the notebook that I normally use with dual boot Win 10 / Win 7, and the few times I need to open that software to consult or modify an old project of mine I start with Win 7 and work without problems.
Now I wanted to replicate it on the Otiplex, and I stumbled upon this driver problem, which I was able to quickly fix thanks to your guidance.
Ciao
Paolo
