Boot up problems - chkdsk runs and then nothing else
First symptom - the computer was running slow.
Next symptom - the backup device (I run automatic backup to an external hard drive) wasn't completing
I tried unplugging the USB cable and booting up without the external drive so that I could see if that was what was causing problems.
Then - the final symptom. The computer wants to run chkdsk when it starts. If I let it run chkdsk, it comes up with hundreds of "sector not readable" errors, and then it says "chkdsk complete", but it doesn't boot up. I can bypass chkdsk and let it boot up ignoring the errors, and it looks like all my data is there - I suspect the errors are on the external disk (especially since that was the one reporting errors first). The system won't stay up long enough without freezing for me to uninstall the external drive, so that I could verify my theory.
I tried running diagnostics but the system wouldn't recoginze either the internal (Dell) or external (Maxtor) drives as something that could have diagnostics run. Then it wouln't boot up after diagnostics.
Any ideas?
