RaidGroup Extension issue / CX3 10c

Hi,

We have an issue trying to extend our one and only Raid Group.

We have a Raid6 / 8 disks (0-7)  / Raid Group  that we would like to extend with 2 new disks.

Disk 0-7 are 400 GB / Seagate DG118032576

Disk 8-9 are 450 GB / (looking for the refs)

FLARE version : 03.26.010.5.014

SnapView / NavisphereManager / AccessLogix : Active

The Raid Group has 10 LUNs, all created on the 8 existing disks, Raid6, for a total of ~2To.

We have 3 MetaLuns using the diffrent LUNs.

The new disks are visible in the enclosures 8 & 9.

When we go to Raid-Group properties, last tab (Disks), the Expand button is greyed out.

Reading the documentations I see that prerequisites seems ok :

- We can have a RaidGroup in Raid 6 with more than 8 disks,

- We can extend a RaidGroup in Raid 6

What are we missing ?

By the way :

- We cannot afford buying a third disk right now, (and then create a Raid 5 Group, and expand the MetaLuns)

- We cannot consider building a Raid 1 Group, and expand the MetaLuns, not enough secure.

- We really would like to proceed in the cleanest way : defrag and then expand the Raid Group.

    Disk 8-9 are 450 GB / Seagate DG118032663 - 005048954 - RC05

(Vendor / Clarion Part Number / Clarion TLA Part Number / Revision)

    Damned,

    Reading this : http://storagenerve.com/2009/07/15/emc-clariion-raid-6-requirements-and-limitations/

    • Defragmentation with RAID-6 is currently not supported on Flare Release 26.  => is this true ? so bad ...
    • You cannot add new drives to an existing RAID-6 LUN, but you can expand the LUN through RAID-6 MetaLUN technology. Example of this will be, if you have a 6D+2P RAID-6 set and would like to add 16 more drives to the same RAID Group, you cannot accomplish it, but if you manage to create either 2 sets of 6D+2P or 1 set of 14D+2P, and then run a MetaLUN concatenate, you will be able to necessarily achieve the same end result.  => that sucks

I would really be interested in the Whitepaper if someone has the link ...

Raid 6 raid groups cannot be expanded. There should be a primus and white paper floating explaining the same.

    Best Regards

Is there any Flare update that would allow a raid-6 extension ?

    Hi,

RAID 6 RAID group cannot be expanded as it is a limitation.

you may find the RAID 6 whitepaper from EMC from..

    http://www.emc.com/collateral/hardware/white-papers/h2891-clariion-raid-6.pdf

    Refer Page 10 for limitation...

    Thanks
