Can I mix ecc and non-ecc rimms ?

I ordered, from Dell, 256MB to go with my existing 256. My existing RDRAM has 2 128 sticks, I presumed that is what Dell would send me. In fact, they sent me 1 256MB RIMM. Samsung, part 16R082GBN1-CK8 800-45 It has more numbers, 0207H 256MB / 16, and also, Dell part no. D9461P.D .

Obviously, this one stick of 256MB ram won't work. why Dell didn't send 2 128's is beyond me, but I have decided to get another 256 and go ahead and expand to 768MB as opposed to my original intention of 512MB. So. I am now shopping non-Dell for a 256 MB Samsung stick, but I don't know if what they gave me was ECC or not. Does it matter ? Probably it is non-ECC, but if it is ECC and I buy a non-ECC, am I in trouble ?
